JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli Foreign Ministry document says the country has instructed its diplomats to warn other governments that historic Mideast peace accords could be nullified if the Palestinians seek international recognition at the United Nations this month.
According to a list of diplomatic talking points obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, a decision to upgrade Palestinian observer status at the U.N. would "give Israel the right to reconsider and nullify" its 1990s interim agreements with the Palestinians.
The document warns of "grave consequences," including unspecified "unilateral Israeli responses."
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, frustrated with years of deadlock in peace efforts, says he will turn to the U.N. on Nov. 29. The U.S. and Israel say the Palestinians can win independence only through negotiations.
