St. Ignatius, Western Reserve tie in soccer: High School Sports Roundup

Unbeaten and two-time defending Division I state champion St. Ignatius finished in a 1-1 tie with another undefeated soccer team for the second time in three days.

Saturday's stalemate came against host Western Reserve Academy (11-0-1).

St. Ignatius (10-0-3) took a 1-0 lead 35 minutes into the nonleague game when Alec Nagucki scored off a cross by David Sisson. The Pioneers answered 43 seconds into the second half when Ryan Hassell scored off a through-ball by C.J. Polak.

The Wildcats tied unbeaten Twinsburg on Thursday.

University School 5, Chagrin Falls 1 Jude Gingo's two goals and two assists by Trenton Belucia led the Preppers (9-2-1), ranked fifth in Division II.

Highland 0, Archbishop Hoban 0 Knights goalie Jeremiah Carsten made seven saves, while his counterpart, Andrew Markowski, had four saves in the nonleague tie. Hoban is ranked third in Division II.

Girls soccer

Magnificat 1, North Olmsted 0 The Blue Streaks (9-1-1), ranked No. 4 in Division I, squeezed out the nonleague triumph. Natalie Coury scored the goal and netminder Kaleigh Piscioneri's six saves earned the shutout.

Solon 4, Hudson 0 Comets Natalie Ockunzzi and Emily Russell had a goal and assist apiece in the Northeast Ohio Conference victory. Winning goalie Kristen Confroy had five saves.

Volleyball

Elyria quadrangular The host Pioneers (10-8) went over the .500 mark thanks to a three-set win over Avon and two-set triumphs over Olmsted Falls and St. Joseph Academy. Alexis Middlebrooks paced the winners with 24 kills and 14 solo blocks while Tyra Darden contributed 20 kills and 22 digs. Emily Mandoke added 20 kills, 23 digs, Megan Schaefer finished with 34 digs and Haley Looney dished out 60 assists.

Wadsworth 3, Hudson 1 The Grizzlies, ranked 10th in the Division I coaches state poll, improved to 16-1 thanks to Peyton Booth's 25 kills, Rachel Goddard's 27 digs and Haley Beavers' 46 assists.

Lorain triangular Clearview (14-2) defeated Vermilion and the host Titans, giving head coach Dave Dorinski his 100th career win.Heather Younkin's 27 kills headed the Clippers' effort as did Sarah Ernst's 45 assists and Rachael Bolmeyer's 28 digs.

Padua 3, Huron 0 The Bruins, top-ranked in Division II, ran their record to 16-2 with a nonleague win over Huron, ranked No. 9 in Division III. Emily Marcinowski and Maci Budzik combined for 16 kills, and Gina Kilner and Mary Djukic totaled 45 assists.

Toledo St. Ursula 3, Avon Lake 0 The Shoregals, ranked 19th in Division I, suffered their second loss in 15 matches at the hands of No. 2-ranked St. Ursula. Christine Bohan collected eight kills and Whitney Craigo finished with 24 assists in the losing cause.

Football

No. 22 Shaker Heights 49, Cuyahoga Falls 9 The Raiders (5-1) cruised to the Northeast Ohio Conference crossover-game romp behind quarterback Jimmy Pope's 5-for-5, 160-yard, two-touchdown effort.

Ramses Owens had three touchdown runs and Keith McCrae's 37-yard touchdown interception sparked the defense.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 44, Benedictine 7 The Lions (4-2, 1-0) scooted out to a 29-0 halftime lead in the North Coast League Blue Division opener.

NDCL rushed for 228 yards and passed for 113 yards while limiting the Bengals to 79 yards of total offense.

Nicholas Evans paced the ground attack with 137 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Robert Nash completed 7 of 14 passes and a touchdown. His primary receiver, Anthony Varcelli, caught four passes for 60 yards and a 15-yard touchdown.

Beachwood 28, Independence 0 A 14-point third quarter propelled the Bison (5-1, 3-0) to the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division blanking. Tailback Nate Hamilton gained 189 yards and a touchdown while quarterback Corey Jones passed for 106 yards, rushed for 72 yards and totaled three touchdowns. Nolan Mitchell, Jordan Lane and Armani Smith teamed up for 23 tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.

Girls cross country

Midwest Meet of Champions Maddie Buzek (20:25.96), Shea O'Brien (20:37.98) and Meredith Cabe (20:51.15) placed 1-2-3 to lead St. Vincent-St. Mary to 22 points and the team championship.

Vermilion Invitational Westlake won the hardware with 43 points as Robyn Hageman entered the chute first with a third-place clocking of 19:47.30. Gabrielle Neubauer of fourth-place Open Door Christian Academy (144) turned in the race's best time of 19.16.91.

CVNP Invitational Sammy Bockoven's second-place clocking of 20:56.7 was a big reason Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy collected 60 points and the team crown.

Boys cross country

Midwest Meet of Champions Keith Genetin of sixth-place Green (131 points) was edged out of the individual crown by Seth Wenrich of champion Westerville North (36), 16:57.00-17:04.21. Mentor (116), headed by Brandon Stoldt's ninth-place time of 17:18.00, finished third.

Vermilion Invitational It was double the pleasure for Amherst's Josh Park. The sophomore had the day's best time of 15:44.31 as the Comets prevailed with 54 points.

CVNP Invitational Host Woodridge ran away with the team title with 62 points as Matthew Wojcik placed second with a time of 17:32.6. Garrett Crichlow of 10th-place Twinsburg (226) ran 17:17.8 to take top individual honors.

Girls tennis

Southwestern Conference Tournament. Avon won the crown over Rocky River, 38-34, with two singles titles and a pair of doubles champions. Abby Schwartz and Halle Mentler won second and third singles, respectively, while Annie DeLuca and Maddie Nakon made up the winning first doubles team and Melissa Cirilo and Riley Monroe did likewise at No. 2 doubles.
