Google adds Esperanto as its 64th machine translatable language

Esperanto isn't just something Microsoft uses to tease Google for abandoning video codecs, it's a legitimate, manufactured language. Created in the late 1800's by Dr. Ludwig L. Zamenhof, Esperanto was designed to be an easy to learn language that would help folks from all over the world understand each other. Seeing as how Google Translate shares similar goals, the Mountain View firm felt Zamenhof's homemade tongue would be the perfect fit for its machine translation service. Despite a rather small sample size of pre-existing translated material to feed the Google language machine, the firm says Google Translate handled Esperanto surprisingly well -- partially crediting the language's learner friendly construction for the service's success. Sure, it may not be the most useful addition Google Translate's ever seen, but hey, it gets us one step closer to watching cult classics like Incubus without the subtitles. What's that, you haven't heard of William Shatner's pre-Star Trek, all Esperanto romp? Crack open your machine translator and head past the break, then.

Top Chef's Lindsay: I Didn't Take Enough Risks (omg!)

Lindsay Autry | Photo Credits: Virginia Sherwood/Bravo

When does frozen mousse trump perfectly cooked halibut? When you're on Top Chef! Despite her nearly inedible, ice-hard confection, Sarah ? with some major backing from Tom Colicchio ? made it to the finale with Paul over her pal Lindsay Autry, whose error-free, albeit less creative, dish sent her packing. "I think they were really nitpicking at that point and it came down to doing something risky like what she did against me being great, but not risky enough," Lindsay tells TVGuide.com. "I know I didn't make any mistakes, but I guess they wanted to see more." Was she surprised that her well-made dish lost to such shoddy execution? Find out below.

Top Chef's Beverly: I definitely felt the fan support

The edit seemed like it was really close between the three of you. Did it feel that way up there?
Lindsay:
I really feel like even when it got down to the four of us ? even before Beverly got back ? that it was a close game. One little thing is what sends you home because at the end of the day, only one person can win. But I did feel that it was really close. At Judges' Table, they all had very positive things to say. I don't know if they aired it or not since I didn't see it, but Padma said that she thought it was one of the best dishes I made all season. Then it was like, "Pack your knives and go." I was like, "Oh, OK." [Laughs] "Great, thanks!"

Well, Gail fought for you and liked your dish overall. And Tom really fought for Sarah. She, obviously, had the bigger mistake with the frozen mousse. Why do you think she edged you out? Did her doing something risky like that, even though it failed, outweigh your consistency?
Lindsay:
Well, we had a break between Texas and Canada. I think that Paul and I came back staying true to who we've been all season, and I think that Sarah came back more inspired. She showed that this whole experience made her grow as a chef and made her more creative. I think that when it came down to it that it did come into play ? the judges were able to see that Sarah stepped it up and took a risk and showed something. And I'm really proud of her for doing that. ... Standing in between the two of them while we were cooking ? seeing Sarah pull out an anti-griddle and Paul was doing a powder and using liquid nitrogen ? I knew in that moment that, yeah, I might be going home since I wasn't doing anything crazy or risky with molecular and modernist techniques. But I felt that I stayed true to what the concept was, and I think that's what Top Chef is truly about, so no regrets. Food is very subjective; it's all about your interpretation.

You did the tomato ice that they loved.
Lindsay:
Yeah, I knew that conceptually that I went really far with the Fire & Ice theme. Every component of what I did fit. Ultimately, I think my downfall was my cocktail. I think it wasn't as intriguing as what Sarah and Paul did. But I also knew my cocktail was the only one that really tied in to the dish. ... In every single challenge, there was that one thing like, "Why are we doing this?" As a chef, it's important that you're part of your beverage program because food and drink go hand in hand. But I didn't think that it would come down to me going home over a cocktail. I thought it would be judged more on the food.

Were you happy you redeemed yourself with halibut after the Restaurant Wars fiasco?
Lindsay:
[Laughs] Tom made a comment about that when we were in the kitchen ? that I chose halibut because of what happened with Beverly and I was like, "Oh my God! I didn't even think about it!" I really didn't. I got to Whole Foods and I really wanted to use black cod, but they didn't have enough, so I went with halibut. I didn't do it out of spite. It was the only fish they had enough of for 150 people!

Top Chef's Ed: What's the point of Last Chance Kitchen?

Restaurant Wars was probably your low point. Would you agree?
Lindsay:
Uh-huh. [Laughs] Restaurant Wars was definitely when I felt at my lowest. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I wasn't in the kitchen because it's a cooking competition and I wasn't touching my own food. I'm very hard on myself. Even though we won, I talked to Beverly and Grayson and Sarah, and none of us felt like we really won that one because it was so challenging.

Why did you choose halibut, knowing that Beverly had to cook it for you, instead of something with an easier prep?
Lindsay:
I didn't think it was difficult. I knew that Beverly's dish was a little bit elaborate and I felt that after we had talked everything through, there only needed to be three steps to my dish. Obviously, it evolved into more than that to get it out. I picked my dish last. I let Sarah, Beverly and Grayson decide what they wanted to do since I was doing front of house. We obviously needed a fish course, so that's why I did it. And for the past three years, I've run a very seafood-focused restaurant, where I cooked fish every single day. In my mind, it was an easy pickup. But we're all very different in what we do.

A lot of fans didn't like how you treated Beverly there, especially since she was being picked on so much. Did you have any other problems with her like Heather and Sarah did?
Lindsay:
I never had a problem with Beverly. Up until that point, I had never worked with her in a team effort. And we roomed in different rooms, so I didn't really have a lot of interaction with her, which I think a lot of people who watch the show don't understand, whether it's because of the editing or whatnot. I really didn't get the chance to get to know her. In Restaurant Wars, a lot of it has to do with editing. If you watch, I kind of lose my sh-- on everybody. [Laughs] It wasn't just her. I did get a little more intense with her because people weren't eating my dish. After seeing six people not eat my dish, it was like, "Oh my God! What's going on?" I just kind of lost my cool. But I never had any problem with her. Even after it was over, she was telling me, "I'm so sorry." And I was like, "Don't worry about it. I'm sorry I blew up." I mean, none of us had time to think this through. Four hours to open a restaurant and four executive chefs trying to work together? It's meant to be chaotic.

What did you think of Last Chance Kitchen?
Lindsay:
I remember thinking when we were riding the bikes for Pee Wee Herman that there was no way that this is the last challenge to go to the finale. It can't be this, like something is happening. When we did find out, at first, I think Ed, Paul, Sarah and I were a little, I guess, annoyed. In our minds, we were done and you kind of let yourself go out of focus for a second. I think the concept was a great idea because in certain circumstances, chefs go home early for other people's mistakes or whatever. I think Nyesha really proved herself there, but even though she had a good run, it would've been difficult for her to come back after winning so much. I think the thing that upset us at the beginning is that we never stopped. We kept doing all these challenges and even though they did their own challenges, they already dealt with being eliminated, and I think that only makes you stronger.

Top Chef's Grayson: I wasn't excited about Last Chance Kitchen

Since they do simpler challenges on Last Chance Kitchen, do you think it's fair that someone could win Top Chef without going through all the challenges on the actual show?
Lindsay:
Well, I think it was great that Beverly got to come back and redeem herself. I think that she came back a stronger chef, but I think that it ended up the way it needed to be. Even bringing her back, it just kind of worked itself out that the people who are left have been here the whole time. We'll see what happens if they continue it.

Speaking of the bike task, what did you think of all the wild challenges this season?
Lindsay:
When I found out that we were going to Texas, which was just a few days before we went, I knew that there was going to be a lot of barbecue and chili type of challenges. I was surprised at how many group challenges we did. I did feel that a lot of the challenges were very physical, more so than in past seasons. Sometimes I felt like I was on Survivor. [Laughs] Like, "Oh my God! I should've done that PX90 before I left! Maybe I could run faster!" But I think that's what Top Chef is all about. They put you in these surreal situations to test how good a chef you are. Even though none of what we did had anything to do with the day-to-day life of being a chef, flexibility and your ability to adapt is something we deal with every day and I think that this whole season was just taking that to the extreme.

What are you up to now?
Lindsay:
I'm doing a lot of dinners and appearances. I recently lost my position in Palm Beach and I'm pursuing some other opportunities, so we'll have to stay tuned and see!

Increase Your Longevity By Using Green Inexpensive Home ...

Keeping things clean around your home is one of the best things you can do to improve your home. When you decide that you want to improve the state of your home by cleaning it, you should use methods that are green or environmentally friendly. You actually can do a lot of harm, specifically to the pets and people living in your home, if you use traditional cleaning products, which are chemical-based. Green cleaning methods are good for your home, and this article will point out some valuable tips.

Of all the cleaning projects among home improvement, cleaning the oven can be the most challenging. It is even a daunting task when you have a self-cleaning oven. It is not necessary to use dangerous chemicals to get your oven clean, even though you have left it until you think it will never come clean. Better ways are out there. The paste created out of the water and baking soda, is spread everywhere in the oven and does its work during the night. The baking soda will work on the dirt and grease stains while the paste hardens. It might be a little bit of a challenge to get the oven scraped out, but nothing a little elbow grease can?t fix. Another plus is that it is a great workout. Cleaning your bathroom, while using cleaners filled with chemicals, is a dangerous idea. The ventilation in the bathroom is not the best, so there is no way for the chemicals to get out of room. Three different cleansers you should be using at various times are vinegar, borax and baking soda, since they are not filled with chemicals. Not only will you get a clean bathroom, but you won?t have to be concerned with chemicals in the air. When you are bathing, let the steam escape by leaving the bathroom door open a bit, and having the fan running constantly will cut down on mildew.

Adding several houseplants to your home can actually make it literally green. Houseplants don?t just enliven the environment. Their main work is to purify the air and be an air filter. There are various plants that work best for cleaning the air, and they are English Ivy, rubber plants, spider plants and peace lilies. The more oxygen the air has the better it is for health, and that is what these plants do. Eighteen plants will work better than twelve if your house is around 1800 square feet in size. This way you won?t have to spend a bunch of money on environmentally poor air purifiers and filters for your home. So many people overlook the fact that how you clean matters just as much as whether or not you clean. Once you give your house a good and thorough cleaning, that might be the only improvement your house needs. Using green cleaning techniques makes the process even better both for your health and the health of your home.

Coffee ? From Foods to Drink. ? Finest Gourmet Foods

Good food - Herbs - Puddings

Content article is written from Web Link

Coffee ? From Meals to Drink. The background of the discovery of coffee is rife with speculation. Blog

Its transition from food to beverage is equally open to interpretation and historical variations. Early European explorers and botanists assumed that Ethiopians chewed raw coffee beans for energy once selecting their grazing goats consuming the coffee berry. They would pound the ripened coffee berries and blend them with animal fat so they became pasty round pellets. The focus of coffee, body fat, and protein grew to become a crucial source of power and sustenance, mainly for the duration of lean occasions or for the duration of war. The coffee cherries had been also very likely eaten raw simply because the pulp is sweet and has the added gain of caffeine. Early records even indicate that coffee cherries were URL used to make wine.

Its doable that coffee was handled as food in Arabia as properly. Only later did the early Arabs use it as a drink. Documents show that the earliest edition of coffee as a drink took spot by steeping whole coffee hulls in cold h2o.

The Life Of A Canadian Angel: LASHEM Double Trouble Mascara ...

My Thoughts

I have never used any eye lash products except for mascara of course on my eyelashes so I was a bit?skeptical?but excited as well to try it out. If you have sensitive eyes,?Lashem Measurable Difference Lash Gel has taken out all the junk that might cause you to have?irritated?eyes, while wearing mascara.?I've only been using this a week, so I will update my review as I use this more. In just one week, however,?so far the results look very promising.?I have already noticed a slight increase in my lash length. It also works great as a conditioner for your eyelashes.?

To use it, you use the brush applicator and stroke it along your top and bottom lashes as if you were applying eyeliner on the base. It glides on smoothly, easily and sinks right in. As mentioned above, I'll continue to update my review. For now, it seems to be working and is easy to use and apply.

WEEK 3 UPDATE: After using this for two weeks, I'm still really pleasantly surprised by how well this is working! The ends of my lashes also now have a nice curl to them. I'm surprised by how quickly this product seems to be working.?

WEEK 5 UPDATE: I've been using this for 5 weeks now and my eyelashes definitely fall off less frequently. I did notice that they are fuller as well. Not a "huge" difference but definitely noticeable. The difference is especially noticeable when I put on mascara. They are longer in general, especially those little lashes in the corner. My bottom lashes have grown a little as well. They are conditioned, soft and look thicker to me. I have also used it for eyebrows and it helps to fill in between. It didn't appear to leave any discolorations like some Eyelash growth serum's are known to do.

CONS:

  • At $19.99 for the Double Trouble Mascara and $69.99 for the Lash Gel, it's a little pricey. However, they are giving a 25% discount for a limited time.?
  • Available online through their?website?only.

If you expect instant results, it's not gonna happen. It took just almost a month for me to see noticeable results and your experience might differ. One container of LASHEM Measurable Lash Gel lasts 180 days if application is once a day. One container of LASHEM Measurable Lash Gel lasts 90 days if application is twice a day, as suggested.

Have you tried Lashem mascara? Which mascara do you use?

Veterans face job discrimination; feds are biggest offender

?

By msnbc.com staff

It has become a mainstream story ? a soldier is unable to find work because of military obligations.

Many of those stories are about small, private companies. But according to The Washington Post, the biggest offender is the federal government.

The story, titled, ?Returning military members allege job discrimination ? by federal government,? reported that offices within the federal government have reneged on job offers to members of the military and fired others after a long absence.

?

By federal law, service members may be excused from work for military service. ??

Last year, veterans submitted 1,548 complaints that employers violated the law. Of those, more than 18 percent involved federal agencies -- the highest percentage among employers.

?On the one hand, the government asked me to serve in Iraq,? retired Army Brig. Gen. Michael Silva told the Post. Silva is a reservist who commanded a brigade in Iraq and was fired from his job as a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol contractor on his return. ?On the other hand, another branch of government was not willing to protect my rights after serving.?

While the federal government is the largest offender, it is also employs the most veterans. According to the Post, more than a fourth of its employees have been in the military. ?

The secret world of Arriettty - movie review | Gather

When I discovered that this animated movie was based on the book series called The Borrowers, I just HAD to see it. A number of years ago, a television movie was also based on that series, and it was AWFUL!

This Japanese movie, dubbed into English, was produced by same man who created Spirited Away. I was entranced by it. The characters, the story line and the artwork were all amazing.

The concept is that there are small people living in the walls who take - borrow - little items we leave lying around. I remember a scene from the book where an empty match box is made into a bed (the people are THAT little). In the movie, a dollhouse had been created when the mother of the main character (boy) had been a girl herself - especially for the Borrowers to live in, but they never came. Their lives are based on the premise that if they're seen by a human, they have to leave.

The movie was based on the first book. I wonder if there'll be sequels. I'd like to see more.

Please provide details below to help Gather review this content. If it is found to be inappropriate and in violation of the Gather Terms of Service, action will be taken.

Top 7 Tips to Leading Your Life

Sometimes life can seem hard. The following steps can help you to see various factors that can alter your life into satisfying and rewarding one.

1) Do not aim for second place in any area of your life ? second place is not what you are searching for and not what you want to be at. None wants to be at a second place in his or her life. You should look only for the first place. It is also funny to be a partaker as well. Try your best. If it is not enough, then try harder next time, but if you tried your best really, do not worry and get back to the old outline and find something that you are good at.

2) You should love everyone and your enemies should not be an exception. Try to forgive quickly. Do not grumble. One woman once said: ?Unforgiveness is similar poisoning yourself and awaiting the other person to die?. Do not hold anger and do not do not think negatively about other people.

3) Try to eat something tasty always. Do not waste your hunger on bad dishes. If you can taste good foods, do this without any hesitation.

4) Always correct your mistakes. If you do or say something wrong, have courage to acknowledge this and correct. Be cautious with words that you use, because they can injure and damage. Words can cut like a blade. Before you say something, think thoroughly.

5) Consume lots of veggies and fresh fruits. Green vegetables are very useful. So, include them into your diet.

6) Buy the best possible ? if you purchase cheap goods, you pay twice. Do not buy cheap products, because they will not make you happy. Instead always buy the best you can and you can manage to pay for.

7) Always search positive things in life. It is very important. Do not focus on bad things in life, try to find good ones and events in your life. Of course, there is a bad side and it should be recognized, but make certain that only positive things are important to you. Take care and consider these useful tips to lead a blissful and fulfilled lifestyle.

If you are happy with your life, be grateful, because you have reached the place which many people would like to be at. Just look at all the possibilities that are opened to you. If you are not in that place, do not feel sad. The first thing to be done is realizing what you want to alter in your life. Most people do not want to alter themselves. If you strive for changes, you are ahead of everyone. If you are reading this article, you are already progressing in your life. So, I wish you good luck in future.

Actually many things for many people seem ordinary, for some people they are not that possible to do. Though there are individuals like disability support worker and home support worker who assist disabled persons. If you want to make your contribution and help those people, begin with learning some info on what is a family support worker before making the final decision.

Be Part of the Evolution

?Julian Assange? said Noam Chomsky ?should be congratulated for carrying out the responsibilities of a citizen in democratic societies, where the population should be aware of what their selected representatives are doing and planning.? Assange is perhaps to pay a heavy price for disclosure, as simultaneously, Bradley Manning, a soldier of conscience, is to pay the ultimate one. The effectiveness of these two men?s actions should be taken to heart, and into our collective activism ?For those that have the privilege to know have the privilege to act (Einstein). Also we must understand that we are not just standing in quiet or rowdy resolution and solidarity with an Assange or Manning just because our conscience dictates but because we are connected at the very substance of our being and in an evolutionary reality. We have a constituent understanding of these two, and other men and women of conscience, because we are not in any way separate in time and space from them or their suffering. We are individuated, distinct, but never apart. The 1% would rule, the 99% would move.

It is why the ?occupy movement? is coherent, growing, and in tune with a universal melody soon to become symphonic, expressed through a rising chorus of intelligent and persistent voices. We gather nimbus around our feet and grow wings on our back, and would like the Sirin, close to Eden, symbols of ?world harmony? and ready to fly, swoop, our songs ?going into the soul of man?. For, ?Truth and Love is the only thing that counts. Where this is present, everything rights itself in the end. This is a law to which there is no exception.? (Mahatma Gandhi, Young India 1927).

We the people recognise we are a ?constituency of understanding? (Alan Hart) where a ?transformational politics? beneficent for all, inclusive of all, is arising spontaneously because an evolutionary, therefore, creative fact.

Sometimes one wonders, and in darker moments, if we are in the evening of this civilisation. If it is the afternoon and we have creative time and intellectual space before the twilight to explore significance, then I agree with Carl Gustav Jung that ?the afternoon of human life must also have significance of its own and cannot be merely a pitiful appendage to life?s morning.? We might also accept these words from Dante?s Hell in wary reflection mounting to alarm that we could find ourselves collectively and irrevocably ?in a dark wood, where the right road was wholly lost and gone.? Therefore, as it is right to remind states and would be leaders of their obligations under international law, it is equally right that an international and growing constituency of the people demand that the moral dimension, Emerson?s ?moral sentiment?, is a recognised truth, not relativism, or reductionism, and that the ?moral state? is the effulgent progenitor for any debate on all issues affecting human progress, and the cause behind any evolving effect. Not then ?evil and less evil? but good and more good, for ?Nulle cr?ature humaine ne peut commander ? l?amour? (George Sand).

The required, inculcating, reciprocal and consensual interaction with the public should be a continuous educational project with the most disaffected, damaged and disenfranchised souls of society, based on mutual respect and concern for their and our futures, inextricably linked by evolution. Out of this evolving system of reintegration the new must arise, arise naturally, spontaneously and simultaneously. It is how the brain operates when creative ?the organizing centre of neurological activity expand[s] from the frontal lobes to reincorporate the limbic system and embellish rationality with depth of feeling? the reptilian brain a ?help mate? now ?like a hologram? ?The brain operates as a resonating instrument, each of its fine-tuned ?strings? vibrating in sympathy with the others. No part is repressed, and there is little remaining internal censorship. No longer is there warfare among instinct, feeling, reason, each of which assumes a respected place in awareness. This internal alliance allows a person to access data of great complexity, and then scrutinize them from several angles simultaneously.? (John E. Nelson, M.D, Healing The Split)

Quantum Thinking

The above shows Democracy, then, as a natural state that arises from a symbiotic mind-brain unity. We must imagine, and simultaneously enact into being a new political society, a societal awakening to the inherent creativity of our being and becoming, the very stuff of a mind-brain complex in relationship with the highest values, operating as society should, as it must, as it will: a ?Quantum Society?. ?Quantum systems and our human imagination involve ?superpositions?. They contain several possible realities all juxtaposed, one on top of the other that they explore simultaneously by throwing out ?feelers? towards the future. Quantum systems do this to test out the most stable future energy state; our imagination does it to test out the best possible future life scenario.? (Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall, The Quantum Society). Society must do it from the clearest vision to realise the highest form of civilization. The artist Robert Delaunay put it poetically ?Simultaneity in light is harmony, the rhythm of colours which create the vision of man. Human vision is endowed with the greatest reality, since it comes directly from contemplation of the Universe.?

Then, a growing awareness evolves that ?Living systems are self organizing, self maintaining, and self renewing?. All cohering wholes, confluent, cooperating, integrating and therefore powerful because universally, and in law, connected. We are through our cooperating principles, values, actions related to, cleaved to, the actions of others in a growing, evolutionary world wide constituency. We are ?changing the world from the inside out? (McLaughlin & Davidson, Spiritual Politics), and this means we are a constituent part by evolutionary right, of transformational political action; it, the hope of our mind, the reality of our being and becoming, represents the vouch-saved certainty of humankind?s future We are connected by law, and must govern by law. The ?Occupy Movement? is the intelligent occupation of our own house and it indeed has many rooms, spacious, light-filled, sun-kissed, and ready for habitation. Be a conscious integrated quantum part of your evolution.

In his excellent book Destination of The Species Michael Meacher makes this salient, because scientific, point ?Physical laws cannot explain biological finalism or the teleological activities of living beings, reductionism does not allow for the fact that each successive level of complexity occurring in biological systems, new qualities can and often do arise which cannot be understood by processes of sub-division, but only by recognition of the effects of integration.? (my emphasis). ?Our thoughts ?hang together? with what [physicist] Roger Penrose has referred to recently as a ?oneness, or a ?globality?. They [thoughts] cannot be broken down into distinct elements that on their own make any sense. Penrose uses the example of the totality of a musical composition to illustrate this.? (Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall). The celebrated physicist Fritjof Capra explains why this is a fact in nature, ?Evolution is not just adaptation to environment ? but rather an organism and its environment evolv[ing] together. Likewise, in music, the essence of the musical chord lies in relationship. Even subatomic particles are not discrete and separate.? Neither is a politician and his or her constituents, or importantly a constituent from governance and its appurtenances. ?[T]he most striking parallel between quantum reality and our conscious thought processes is in unity, or holism, that distinguishes both.? (Zohar and Marshall)

However, Mikhail Gorbachev explains both the current difficulties and solution ?The roots of humanity?s troubles run very deep. There are no simple prescriptions to overcome them ? What is needed are changes in consciousness. In relations between people, between nations and their attitudes to nature.? (my emphasis) And, the attitudes to human life if you are a rampaging dominant power.

Trouble in the wood:

The militarised therefore explosive dark wood that is the creation of American power is an unnatural world, and an artificially complex one. Looking at this febrile dank reality one would agree with Noam Chomsky that we must try on a daily basis, and with some stringency, to ?capture one significant aspect of a highly complex reality.? To understand that the significance we attach to any given event is perhaps an important one, then the understanding of the reasoning behind the precise organising of the forms that have led to powerful, sustained and destructive expression by successive US administrations, is crucial, for in prosecuting and perpetuating war American administrations are breaking laws man made, natural, divine, in a giddy violent dance high on immorality aching for ?full spectrum dominance? and the control of everything whist understanding nothing. One must submit the US is not alone in spinning webs of invidious influence, yet those webs have a significantly dominant spider, and that spider has the stars and stripes on its thorax.

What we are up against:

?All nations are imposing some idea on their people, but most [nations] feel force is necessary. This is because they misunderstand the time factor and feel that the immediate [so-called] good is more important than the long-term education of people so they will voluntarily accept ideas.? (A. A. Bailey), as demonstrated for example by the brutal crack-down across the Middle East and North Africa during the Arab Spring, the violent repression of Tibetan monks before they self immolated, the heavy-handed -and in many cases unlawful- police attacks on peaceful members of the global Occupy Movement. This leads to a ?convulsive and percolating strife,? these words from former National Security Advisor to President Carter, Zbigniew Brzezinski, underline the course on which nation states and in particularly the chest beating-self-declared-hegemon America, are set, and further underscore their delusion in the belief of the ultimate transforming power of overwhelming force. Brzezinski ?America is the world transforming society, even revolutionary in its subversive impact on sovereignty-based international politics.? (my emphasis). Brzezinski also thinks ?for better or worse America is the global pacesetter, and there is no rival in sight.? This is the arrogance of power in search of an American ?invulnerability? against ?potential antagonists? who closing down the ?missile gap?, would bomb mainland resource guzzling America, if this can?t be ?managed politically? amongst the political elites then it will be enforced unilaterally by the US and its allies. ?The U.S. Congress?s tendency to mandate the certification of other states? behaviour by the U.S. State Department is symptomatic of the current American attitudes, which is increasingly cavalier toward others? sovereignty.? (Brzezinski), as exemplified by the recently imposed Obama executive order for ?stricter sanctions on Iran and its central bank? (AllVoices). ?The executive order described as a further step in the US effort to isolate Iran, prevents any assets deemed to be in US control-including foreign branches of American banks from being transferred, paid, exported or withdrawn.? (Reuters).

AIPAC-WINEP-SUPER PACS:

This Brzezinski ?tendency? is today compounded by right-wing lobby groups and think-tanks, in particular the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), and the state-wide Political Action Committees (Super Pacs) that are collectively ?detonators of democracy? (Ralph Nader) as they collectively seek a stranglehold on American Congress, the State Department, American presidents and candidates so as to control American Foreign Policy. According to the authoritative ?The Israeli Lobby And U.S. Foreign Policy?, by Mearshiemer & Walt, which so raised the ire of AIPAC, ?During the Clinton Administration, for example, Middle East Policy was largely shaped by officials with close ties to Israel or to prominent pro-Israel organizations-including Martin Indyk, the former Deputy Director of research at AIPAC and co-founder of the pro-Israel Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Dennis Ross, who joined WINEP after leaving government in 2001; and Aaron Miller, who has lived in Israel and often visits there.?

Now the AIPAC-WINEP propaganda machine is in tandem-purring-overdrive to persuade the Obama Administration to join Israel in ?surgical strikes? against thousands of targets across Iran. It has been rumoured that many of the installations are in urban areas and strikes would almost certainly result in innocent casualties. ?Unnatural acts? in Iran as declared by Israel translates into, an egregious violation of International Law, namely extrajudicial assassinations of innocent nuclear scientists because it is ?cheaper than war? and in the so-called hope that such killings will slow down the Iranian nuclear programme. Unlike Israel, Iran, a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), maintains vociferously its nuclear programme is for ?peaceful purposes.? and is in NPT terms within its rights to do so. One must here voice legitimate protest against the Iranian Administration human rights record but support its lawful sovereignty and control over its own destiny. Also if we condemn the alleged Israeli assassinations of innocent victims, then, equally, we must condemn the attempted assassination of Israeli diplomats if proven to have been carried out by Iranian agents.

It is worth noting here that the interference of AIPAC, a foreign agent of the Israeli government in American state affairs, is receiving intense media coverage, growing and vocal public protest (Occupy AIPAC) and opprobrium, and once again the attention of the courts as on January 13th 2012, ?A brief filed in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals claims the American Israel Public Affairs Committee is a foreign Agent of the Israeli government with no legitimate charitable purpose. The brief was filed in response to AIPACS court claims that it had been ?cleared of wrongdoing? after secretly receiving stolen classified U.S. industry information from an Israeli embassy official in 1984. AIPAC used the still-classified confidential business information to obtain trade preferences now worth nearly $10 billion per year.? (The Institute of Research Middle East Policy).

The above being so, and tragically, that AIPAC-WINEP are winning the propaganda war is self evident as we find Ben Schreiner?s exposing an America ?with the drums of war beating ever louder against Iran, the U.S military [has] quickly moved to re-establish a war footing in the Persian Gulf. The preparations for a looming military confrontation thus continue apace.? This confrontation agitated for by AIPAC and the Israeli government might not end with Iran but draw in Russia and China both of which have considerable investments in Iran, also Pakistan who vow to stand with Iran if attacked by Israel, for religious and ideological reasons.

American administrations show disregard not just of sovereignty and international law, but human rights and indeed the sacred human life. The deaths mentioned below are of Americans what of the unnamed Afghans lost to American and allied aggression? ?On July 7, 2011, U.S. troop deaths from the war in Afghanistan since president Obama took office reached 1000. That means that nearly two-thirds of the U.S. fatalities in the war in Afghanistan have occurred during the Obama administration, which has managed the war for a mere quarter of its duration.? (Just Foreign Policy)

Now as Syria descends into civil war and the Bashar Al-Assad regime slaughters its own citizens (or is it outside interference seeking to destabilise?) as the hawks, vultures, and eagles of the U.S, Russia and China wait to alight on the carrion, there should be a mandated UN to negate this as ?the United Nations is empowered, under Article 1 of its Charter to: ?maintain international peace and security,? to ?develop friendly relations among nations?, ?to achieve international co-operation?, and ?to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of those common ends.?(Archie Kennedy). Kennedy goes on to express the ?challenge? to the UN and the elephant in the global room, ?The United States of America assumes the role of international arbiter and the role of policing the planet. A role rightfully granted to the United Nations. It is widely and implicitly assumed the USA carries this burden and this assumption is rarely challenged.?

So what is this U.S subversive police force really up to in the case of Syria? In Shamus Cooke?s words we discover the reality behind the posturing ?The United States appears to be using a strategy in Syria that it has perfected over the years, having succeeded most recently in Libya: arming small paramilitary groups loyal to U.S. interests that claim to speak for the local population; these militants then attack the targeted government the U.S. would like see overthrown-including terrorist bombing- and when the attacked government defends itself, the U.S. cries ?genocide? or ?mass murder? while calling for foreign military intervention.?

This sort of attitude of ?you?re with or against? American hegemonic ?assumptions?, and if you?re with those powerful assumptions, Americans will still use and abuse you, runs seamlessly through the corporate realm, when Les Leopold takes us through Apple?s hunt for cheap labour and mega profits on the back of slave labour as Apple?s late Steve Jobs decides glass screens as apposed to the easily scratched plastic ones must be fitted to the latest iPhone. Weeks before the phone?s marketing, Apple approaches Foxconn the Chinese manufacturer, who could ?hire 3000 people overnight? to fit the new glass. When the ?glass was ready and trucked to the factory?, recounts Leopold ?managers woke thousands of workers who crawled into their uniforms-white and black shirts for men red for women- and quickly lined up to assemble, by hand, the phones. Within three months Apple had sold one million iPhones.? He goes on, ?Little wonder that Apple just announced that it doubled its already enormous profits over the Christmas holidays. Like pharaohs of old, it?s always paid to build great things on the backs of slave labour.?

Together:

This is how the world is perceived by intellectual, military, corporate and government elites (1%). It is in the recognition that, those Chinese workers corralled and enslaved in the dead of night to satisfy one man?s megalomania, or Assange under pressure, under threat, or Bradley Manning facing a stark future of incarceration, are, an integral part of evolution, that one acts commensurate to their needs, and thereby find that they are part of our very being and becoming, as we are of them.

It is in this profound truth that we find the strength, hope, and certainty that the time of shadows is drawing to its ungodly end; and, if we lift our countenance, just a little, we will see a new dawn, in a glorious light. ?For I mean to propose that each of us in turn, going from left to right, shall make a speech in honour of love.? (Plato)

Be part of the evolution.

How do you refute taxes on your home? | Finance information

Question by jade_jayd : How do you refute taxes on your home
I am in the process of closing on a home. I was lucky enough to buy it for less than its appraised 20.000 dollar value. My problem is that I am being told that I have to pay the taxes based on the appraised value (rather than the amount I actually paid for it) for the remainder of this year (2007), and that I am not able to refute them to have them lowered, till next year. Is this correct? Another source also told me that I have to file the paperwork to refute the taxes by April 30th of this year or I will be unable to have them lowered at all next year, (2008). FDA Thinks Shortage of Cancer Drug for Kids Can Be Averted (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it was cautiously optimistic that a feared shortage of a life-saving drug used to treat a form of childhood leukemia will be averted.

The drug, methotrexate, is used in combination with other drugs to combat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which typically strikes children ages 2 to 5 and is the most common type of cancer in children.

Methotrexate is a linchpin in the treatment of children battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In high doses, the generic drug has been successful in curing patients and beneficial in preventing recurrence. Without the drug, a patient's chance for a cure is reduced while the risk of recurrence rises, oncologists report.

"We are seeing the [three] companies [that make methotrexate] respond to this shortage and they are planning on some very large releases, and we are planning on having the situation resolved," said Valerie Jensen, associate director of the FDA's drug shortage program.

"Right now, from what we are understanding from the companies, the releases will resolve these shortages. So we are watching this very closely," Jensen added. "We are expecting some good releases at the end of this month and continuing into March and beyond."

Oncologists are worried that supplies of methotrexate could be gone in as little as two weeks.

One of the three makers of methotrexate, Hospira Inc., based in Lake Forest, Ill., said Tuesday that it had increased production to "make up for the supply gap."

Thomas Moore, president of U.S. Hospira, said in a news release: "Hospira is doing everything it can to help bring more product to market. This includes working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to qualify a second supplier of the drug's active ingredient to enable increased production. Hospira believes that it can increase its supply to the market if it can secure additional methotrexate active ingredient supply."

The other two manufacturers are Mylan Inc., of Canonsburg, Penn., and Sandoz US Inc., of Princeton, N.J. Both said they are working to head off a shortage of the drug.

Mylan, in a Tuesday news release, said it has "ramped up its production in order to try to meet the resulting increased demand. We are working both on the manufacturing and regulatory fronts to expedite the FDA regulatory approvals necessary to further increase capacity to the extent possible to support the additional demand."

Dr. Elizabeth Raetz, an associate professor of pediatric hematology/oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said methotrexate is a "critical component of ALL therapy."

The concern is that there is a 90 percent chance for cure of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but that's based on the total drug regimen including methotrexate, Raetz said. "There is a deep concern that if that key component is eliminated there would be a reduced chance for cure," she said.

There hasn't been a shortage of the drug at her hospital, Raetz noted, but many other hospitals across the country have reached a critical point, and some centers don't have any at all, she said.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children. It's a disease that affects white blood cells, which help to fight infections in the body. Blood cells are produced in bone marrow. But in leukemia patients, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy blood cells. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the excess white blood cells are called lymphocytes or lymphoblasts, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

The potential shortage of methotrexate is just the latest in a series of drug shortages that have existed for several years.

In 2011, prescription drug shortages in the United States hit an all-time high. Last fall, some 200 drug shortages had been reported, compared to 178 in all of 2010, the FDA reported.

Many of the scarce drugs are injectables, such as cytarabine and cisplatin, used to treat serious conditions such as cancer. Some are only given in hospitals and are "absolutely critical," Jensen said during a news conference in late September.

More than half (54 percent) of shortages in 2010 were due to quality issues, such as sterility or drug impurities. Some were caused by delays or manufacturing capacity problems, while 11 percent were caused by discontinuation of a drug and 5 percent resulted from raw material shortages, Jensen said.

Jensen also said the shortages tend to occur in drugs that aren't "economically attractive." This could mean that only one company produces the drug, making it harder to find alternatives if the supply dries up.

A lot of the problems are tied to generic drugs, health experts explained, because few manufacturers make them and profit margins aren't as high as for drugs still under patent protection.

On Oct. 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed an executive order designed to help ease the drug shortages. The order directed the FDA to "take action" to prevent and reduce the worsening prescription drug shortages.

Specifically, the order directed the FDA to take steps to require drug manufacturers to report any impending shortages or discontinuances six months ahead of the shortage. The agency should also speed up its review of new manufacturing sites, new suppliers and new manufacturing protocols, and also add more staff to its drug-shortage office, the order stated.

Japan planned review of tsunami risk, but too late (AP)

TOKYO ? Four days before a tsunami devastated a Japanese nuclear plant, its operator promised a fuller assessment of the risk of such a disaster ? but not for seven months.

The disclosure in a three-page briefing paper obtained by The Associated Press raises questions about whether the utility and regulators were too complacent about studies that suggested a tsunami could overwhelm the defenses at the 40-year-old Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

It also highlights Japan's slow pace of decision-making on an issue that experts had been warning about for at least 20 months.

"If they had made the decision earlier, then they could have been prepared on March 11," said Hideyuki Hirakawa, an Osaka University expert on governance and the sciences. "There is absolutely nothing you can do in four days."

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed about 19,000 people along Japan's northeastern coast. The surge of water knocked out power at the coastal Fukushima plant, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Tens of thousands have had to leave the area, and it's unclear whether some will ever be able to move back.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. presented the briefing paper, stamped "handle with care," at a meeting with Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency on March 7. The agency released the document to the AP under a public records request.

The paper summarized studies that suggested a tsunami as high as 33 feet (10 meters) might hit the plant, much higher than the 20-foot (six-meter) surge it had been designed to withstand. The actual tsunami was even higher: 45 feet (14 meters).

TEPCO, as the Tokyo-based utility is commonly known, said it would review tsunami preparedness at all its plants by mid-April and present a new assessment of the Fukushima plant by October ? dates listed on the bottom of the first page under "plans for the future."

Masaru Kobayashi, who heads the agency's earthquake-safety section, said he saw the estimates for the first time at the March 7 meeting. "I told them that a speedy response was necessary, if these numbers are true," he said.

But TEPCO spokeswoman Ai Tanaka noted that the government did not order any immediate action. "None of the findings were conclusive," she added.

The report cited 2010 research at the government's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology as saying that two to three more years would be needed to reassess the tsunami risks for northeastern Japan.

However the researcher, Yuichi Namegaya, told the AP that while more time was needed to determine the extent of the risk, the danger was evident. "The studies on a Fukushima tsunami were clear, even before my research," he said.

As early as June 2009, Yukinobu Okamura, a tsunami expert at the same government institute, warned about the need to look more closely at new evidence that a major tsunami called Jogan had hit northeastern Japan in the 9th Century.

"I would like to ask why you have not touched on this at all," Okamura demanded of a panel on nuclear regulatory policy. "I find it unacceptable."

Kobayashi, the regulator, said he called for the March 7 meeting after hearing about research on the Jogan tsunami.

He described the meeting as a polite, perfunctory affair at his agency that lasted 30, maybe 40, minutes.

The document included three diagrams. One was TEPCO's estimate of the maximum tsunami risk, based on 2002 guidelines from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers that were the government-approved standards. The other two were more recent academic projections that suggested the possibility of the higher tsunami.

Kobayashi recalled the meeting after the March 11 tsunami. "The numbers I saw were bigger than what we had earlier assessed," he said. "It had happened, and I felt bad."

When Promoting a Vegan Diet Turns Into Body-Shaming

Warning: long post ahead. If you hadn?t yet seen the new billboard ads that PCRM has put up on billboards in Albany, NY, there: now you?ve seen them.

My first reaction when I saw these ads was shock at how ugly they are. I don?t mean that the bodies pictured are ugly: I mean that using these bodies to prove a point about plant based diet is ugly. My next reaction was embarrassment that this kind of advertising will now be publicly associated with the vegan message. And my final (and lasting) response was disappointment. I am a longtime fan of PCRM: I think they?ve done extraordinary things to champion and protect vegan medical students, to share a truthful message about the health benefits of plant based diet, and to protect the lives of animals. But this latest campaign is, in my opinion, a serious lapse of judgment.

Let me state some facts: I am the first person to say that a plant-based, whole foods diet is one of the surest ways to improve health and protect against chronic diseases. I also believe that a diet high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium is directly linked to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart disease, obesity, Type II Diabetes, and countless other conditions, along with their attendant pain and suffering. And finally, I believe that diets rich in meat, cheese, and dairy are also rich in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium?to say nothing of the harm they do to innocent animals, the environment, and to us. So I?m absolutely on board with sharing a message that declares, ?Look, America. Diets rich in animal fats are very likely to raise your BMI and put you at risk for countless diseases.? But I believe that there are ways to share this message without denigrating and vilifying overweight people, which is precisely what PCRM is doing in these ads.

Since the ads debuted, the primary reaction among consumers/viewers has been one of disgust and hurt. It?s tempting to say that this is simply because people don?t want to admit that eating animal foods is unhealthy or wrong. But the critiques?including those from vegans like me?have been a lot more thoughtful than that. No one disagrees with the basic premise that eating too much cheese?a food that is rich in sodium and cholesterol?is likely to lead to weight gain. But is it fair to say that cheese alone is a guarantee of obesity? And more importantly, is it right to brandish overweight bodies as a way of proving a point?

I don?t think so. This kind of advertising only validates the unnecessary self-loathing and shame that millions of overweight people struggle with already. It compounds the overly reductive idea that skinny=healthy. And it tacitly suggests that a thin body is a virtuous body. Beyond all this, research suggests that fat-shaming is not only ineffective, but actually counterproductive; this article, published in Time magazine last may, cited a study conducted at Yale University, which showcased images of overweight people who were also portrayed as being slovenly or lazy. The images had a devastating effect, heightening anti-fat bias and producing guilt. The authors of the study claimed that ?those who view negative media images may themselves internalize harmful weight-based stereotypes, further worsening their mental health. That may trigger overeating, inactivity and weight gain.?

Of course, we all know this intuitively already: extreme guilt about food choices triggers a sense of hopelessness or rebelliousness, which leads to overeating, which leads to weight gain. But now we have some evidence to that effect. Isn?t it therefore all the more shocking that a non-profit devoted to health-promotion would target overweight audiences this way?

Beyond all this, it?s important to point out how embarrassingly simplistic these ads are. I believe that the role of genetics in health/wellness has been drastically exaggerated, and that everyday lifestyle choices have an enormous role in turning genes on and off, and thus preventing disease. But I?m also well aware of the fact that, while diet and lifestyle are supremely important, they are not the whole story: the field of epigenetics, which is in part devoted to studying how genes for obesity can be passed from parent to offspring before the offspring has a chance to develop dietary patterns of his or her own, is becoming far more important, and for good reason. In this day and age, some children are being born into the obesity epidemic with a genetic predisposition to be overweight, and it?s not yet clear how completely lifestyle choices might be able to deactivate their predisposition.

Additionally, numerous factors, from thyroid dysfunction to stress to mental health, might increase a risk of weight gain, in spite of a person?s best attempts to eat healthfully. And on top of all of this, there are still many cases of people who eat healthy, plant-based diets, and maintain a higher BMI in spite of it. This may not be the norm, but it?s a fact. Anti-weight dialogs ignore the simple truth that, while BMI is very often an accurate measure of health and disease protection, it is not always an accurate measure.

As for cheese: well, I don?t think I need to point out that there are a good many people who eat a whole lot of cheese and remain slim in spite of it. That doesn?t mean that the cheese isn?t packed with cholesterol and salt, nor that its production isn?t likely to have caused a tremendous amount of suffering. But ?cheese=obese? is a laughably simplistic assertion. Aren?t we capable of using more precise, truthful language? Cheese is high in cholesterol, saturated fat, and sodium. Diets that are overly high in cholesterol, saturated fat, and sodium are linked to weight gain and risk for disease. It?s the cholesterol, fat, and salt that are to blame here?claiming that cheese alone is the issue isn?t accurate enough, and it?s actually likely to mislead Americans, who are already prone to vilifying specific foods and food groups (carbs, fats, bread) when they should be giving more to the nuances of nutrition science.

But wait, you?re thinking. What about, say, cigarettes? It?s not the cigarette that kills you, it?s the nicotine and tar and tobacco. Didn?t the anti-smoking ads prove that sometimes you need to shock in order to effect change?

That?s what Neil Barnard has argued, in his defense of the campaign. But there?s a big difference from the cigarette ads I remember from childhood, and these cheese ads. Those ads, which typically pictured triple bypass surgeries or other hospital procedures, didn?t seek to shame the bodies of the people who had smoked. They showed the ultimate outcome of too much tobacco use, which is the likelihood of a medical procedure. And if the PCRM ads had shown an operating room or surgical bed, along with an injunction against diets high in saturated fat, I?d have been all for them. I?m no shrinking violet myself when it comes to messaging.

But they didn?t. They showed sensationalized photos of a woman grasping her overweight thighs, along with a message about cheese. They used heavy people as the target of their campaign, rather than warning all Americans of all sizes?including the many thin Americans who overconsume animal foods?that saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium are unhealthy. They capitalized on people?s guilt, shame, and fear of being overweight to prove a point. And in spite of Barnard?s repeated assertions that food lobbies are to blame for the obesity crisis, this campaign seems far more intent on targeting and blaming individuals. In so doing, it extends far too little compassion to people who are uneducated about their food decisions. Why not educate first, rather than shaming?

The Time article speaks for itself: this is not the way to effect change. Part of why I feel uneasy about the language of ?milk/sugar/meat is no better than heroin/crack/cocaine? is that we human beings have attached enough misery, shame, and guilt to our food choices. And compounding that guilt, by telling us all that our pastries and cheese are exactly the same as heroin, will not advance our message. It may reach some people, but only at the expense of a good many others who find the language accusatory, exaggerated, and triggering.

Instead, let?s focus on using honest language, honest facts, and honest statistics. Plenty of vegan physicians are doing just that: educating the public with simple, dispassionate, and courageous research. Will that be enough to effect wholesale change? I don?t know. But I have to believe it will be more effective than anger and insult.

It?s funny: these ads reminded me a lot of PETA?s ?save the whales? campaign:

image

Which, in addition to being sexist and showcasing a terrible anti-fat bias, did a lot to turn even staunch AR supporters against PETA, an organization that has done groundbreaking and lasting work for animals in other arenas. Compare these ads, and the PCRM ones, to, Mercy For Animals? billboards and TV ads, which seek to ask provocative questions, rather than shame and embarrass the viewer.

image

I think these ads, though tough to watch (check out the TV spots), embody best spirit of courageous, intelligent, and thought-provoking activism. They may be shocking, but they don?t resort to accusatory and personal sentiments to achieve their goals.

In order to effect change, activists sometimes need to push the envelope. I get that, and I respect it. But there are ways to do this without resorting to bullying and discriminatory language. The worst thing about sexist or fatist marketing of veganism is that pushes aside so many of the values upon which the vegan message rests: Compassion. Truthfulness. Hatred of irrational discrimination. A good many vegans?myself included?found our way to veganism intellectually because we disliked the speciesist allegation that animal lives are expendable, whereas ours are precious. So seeing discrimination employed shamelessly in vegan advertising, no matter how well intentioned, will never sit right with me.

I am certain that PCRM?an organization that has been championing animal rights through health-related messaging for over almost thirty years?can and will do better. But for now, I encourage all vegans to speak out against anti-fat bias in the marketing of plant-based diet. One of the most touching, insightful emails I ever got from a reader said the following:

I slip up so easily?it?s not so much the allure of meat/cheese that keeps me going back to the familiar foods, I think its a little bit of shame for not being thin. (A chubby vegan?! The horror! Kidding. kidding.) I am working hard to get healthy, so my progress is noted by my friends, even those who don?t know the extent of my dieting, but I feel like the second I out myself about flirting with veganism I?m going to be expected to drop a ton of weight instantly.

She also wrote,

It?s hard enough being overweight and lugging around a green juice. The eye rolling and casual comments about how ?that girl will try anything? are incredibly hurtful; but, I deal with them, day in and day out. You?d think with the obesity problem in America that someone?s attempts to lose weight or get fit would be rewarded, but so often I find myself on the defensive. It?s like people look at me, see a chubby girl and assume I go home and eat fettucine alfredo, a box of cookies, and a pint of ice cream every night and wash it down with a coke. I eat raw zucchini pasta, for goodness sake!

If nothing else, I hope this email reminds us that vegans and aspiring vegans come in all shapes and forms, and that it?s dangerous to draw assumptions about a person?s willpower or habits simply from appearances. At the very least, alienating and hurting all vegans who don?t happen to have low BMIs for the sake of promoting a health conscious message is not a worthwhile form of activism. While some may claim that shock marketing of the vegan diet is effective, I think we need to tread very carefully with that line of reasoning. If we get to an ?ends justify the means? place with our activism, we may very well wake up one day and find out we?ve forgotten what we stand for.

So, let?s stay true to the real message of a vegan diet, which is a compassionate message. By all means, let?s force people to consider the facts. But let?s do it without shaming, bullying, or devaluing each other.

What do you think of the PCRM ads? With pushing the envelope? How can we ?sell? veganism without losing sight of our ideals?
