Vatican discloses Pope's Twitter handle: @pontifex

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - It's official. Pope Benedict's handle on Twitter will be @pontifex.

He already has 1.2 billion "followers" in the standard sense of the word but next week he will have another type when he enters what for any 85-year old is the brave new world of Twitter.

The Vatican said on Monday that the pope will start tweeting on December 12, the feast of the Madonna of Guadalupe.

"The handle is a good one. It means 'pope' and it also means 'bridge builder'," said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.

"The pope wants to reach out to everyone," he told a news conference.

The first papal tweets will be answers to questions sent to #askpontifex.

The tweets will be going out in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French. Other languages will be added in the future.

"We are going to get a spiritual message. The pope is not going to be walking around with a Blackberry or an iPad and no one is going to be putting words into the pope's mouth. He will tweet what he wants to tweet," Burke said.

Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.

Benedict will be sending his first tweet himself on December 12 but in the future most will be written by aides and he will sign off on them before they are sent in his name.

But while the pope will be one of the world's most high-profile tweeters and have many followers, he will not be following anyone himself.

The pope's Twitter page is designed in yellow and white - the colors of the Vatican, with a backdrop of the Vatican and his picture. It may change during different liturgical seasons of the year and when the pope is away from the Vatican on trips.

FEAR OF HACKING

The Vatican said precautions had been taken to make sure the pope's certified account is not hacked. Only one computer in the Vatican's secretariat of state will be used for the tweets.

"The Pope's presence on Twitter is a concrete expression of his conviction that the Church must be present in the digital arena," the Vatican said.

"This initiative is best understood in the context of his reflections on the importance of the cultural space that has been brought into being by the new technologies ... the pope's presence on Twitter can be seen as the ?tip of the iceberg' that is the Church's presence in the world of new media," it said in a statement.

The pope, who still writes his speeches and books by hand, has given a qualified blessing to social networking.

In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered "a great opportunity", but warned of the risks of depersonalization, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.

In 2009, a new Vatican website, www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called "The pope meets you on Facebook", and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff's speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.

The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.

How, in the animal world, a daughter avoids mating with her father: Paternal 'voice' recognition

How, in the animal world, a daughter avoids mating with her father: Paternal 'voice' recognition

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Paternal recognition ? being able to identify males from your father's line ? is important for the avoidance of inbreeding, and one way that mammals can do this is through recognizing the calls of paternal kin. This was thought to occur only in large-brained animals with complex social groups, but a new study published today in the open access journal BMC Ecology provides evidence in a tiny, solitary primate that challenges this theory.

The study, led by Sharon E Kessler, finds that the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) ? a small-brained, solitary foraging mammal endemic to Madagascar ? is able to recognize paternal relatives via vocalizations, thus providing evidence that this is not dependent upon having a large brain and a high social complexity, as previously suggested.

Because grey mouse lemurs are nocturnal solitary-foragers living in dense forests, vocal communication is important for regulating social interactions across distances where visibility is poor and communication via smell is limited. Though the mouse lemur shares sleeping sites with other mouse lemurs, it forages alone for fruit and insects. It is a particularly interesting species with which to study vocal paternal recognition because, in the wild, females remain in the same area of birth and cooperatively raise young with other female kin. Males do not co-nest with their mates or young and provide no paternal care, which limits opportunities for familiarity-based social interactions. Thus, vocalizations are likely to be important ? particularly for avoiding inbreeding.

The research team from Arizona State University and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany found that two of the most frequent calls of the mouse lemur were the mate advertisement call and the alarm call. Using multi-parametric analyses of the call's acoustic parameters, they could see that both call types contained individual signatures. Through this, they discovered that only male grey mouse lemur advertisement calls, but not alarm calls, contained acoustic paternal signatures. Furthermore, females paid more attention to advertisement calls from unrelated males than from their fathers.

The findings from the study suggest that the discrimination between mate advertisement calls and alarm calls may be an important mechanism for inbreeding avoidance. This is likely to be highly important in the grey mouse lemur species because males are likely to remain in an area for several years and they can expand their ranges to more than twice that of the female's range, making it likely that adult males' ranges will overlap with those of their daughters from previous mating seasons.

The team also proposed that the mouse lemur's ultrasonic calls above the hearing range of owls could be an anti-predator strategy, especially since the species suffers from high predation.

Lead author Kessler commented, "Given that more complex forms of sociality with cohesive foraging groups are thought to have evolved from an ancestral solitary forager much like the mouse lemur, this suggests that the mechanisms for kin recognition like those seen here may be the foundation from which more complex forms of kin-based sociality evolved."

She continued, "Future analyses will determine which acoustic parameters make this kin recognition possible by artificially manipulating acoustic parameters in the calls and then using the modified calls in playback experiments."

(AP) ? Protesters opposed to new President Enrique Pena Nieto's rule clashed with tear gas-wielding police outside Mexico's Congress early Saturday just hours before he was to take the oath of office and return the country's old guard to power.

Pena Nieto already took over at midnight in a symbolic ceremony after campaigning as the new face of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, repentant and reconstructed after being voted out of the presidency in 2000. The PRI ruled for 71 years with a mix of populist handouts, graft and rigged elections.

Hundreds of protesters banged on the tall steel security barriers around Congress, threw rocks, bottle rockets and firecrackers at police and yelled "Mexico without PRI!" Police responded by spraying tear gas from a truck to disperse the crowd and used fire extinguishers on flames from Molotov cocktails. The air was filled with smoke and shouts as officers, their faces streaming with tears from the gas, ordered the crowds to get back.

One officer was seen being taken for medical treatment for injuries to his face.

Pena Nieto has promised to govern democratically with transparency. But his first moves even before the inauguration showed a solid link to the past.

In announcing his Cabinet on Friday, he turned to the old guard as well as new technocrats to run his administration.

"I don't think there is any such thing as a 'new PRI,'" said Rodrigo Aguilera, the Mexico analyst for the Economist Intelligence Unit. "There is a new generation of PRI members, but they don't represent any fundamentally different outlook."

Pena Nieto assumed office in the early seconds of Saturday during a brief ceremony with outgoing President Felipe Calderon at Mexico's historic National Palace. He was to take the formal oath of office later in the day.

The swearing-in ceremony at Congress and then a speech at the National Palace were set to be low on pomp and high on security as Calderon made a smooth transition his goal. Six years ago, Calderon's security unit literally had to muscle him past blockades and protesters to get him into Congress so he could take the oath of office after a razor-thin, disputed victory over a leftist candidate.

Demonstrations were likely outside Congress this time as well and at the city's key monuments. But the country's main leftist party pledged not to swarm the podium this time, and it planned no mass protests like those that paralyzed central Mexico City six years ago.

Mexicans for the most part seemed more focused on the end-of-the-month pay day and Christmas shopping than the arrival of a new president. Divided and ambivalent, many people are wary of a return to the old days, but they're also weary of Calderon's National Action Party and the spike in violence during his six-year attack on organized crime, which has had a toll of 60,000 deaths by some estimates.

Government worker Antonio Vidal, 37, was confident his country wouldn't see much of the PRI of old.

"We've invested heavily in our democracy," he said. "It's very closely watched by civil society, so I don't think the PRI can return to their ways of fraud."

Alma Rosa Martinez, a 40-year-old real estate agent, said she had a very bad feeling.

"It took 70 years to kick them out of power," she said. "How long will it take to kick them out again?"

Pena Nieto has pledged to make economic growth and job creation the centerpiece of his administration, with campaign manager and long-time confidant Luis Videgaray the point person. Videgaray, a 44-year-old economist with a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will lead the treasury department.

Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, a 48-year-old former state governor who is known as a political operator and deal maker, has been named secretary of the interior, a post that will play a key role in security matters.

A bill proposed by Pena Nieto would gather the police and security apparatus under the control of the Interior Department and create a new national anti-corruption commission. Those changes are expected to pass Congress next week.

Pena Nieto has also promised to push for reforms that could bring major new private investment into Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, the crucial but struggling state-owned oil industry. Such changes that have been blocked for decades by nationalist suspicion of foreign meddling in the oil business.

Caring for Aging Relatives in Their Home ? Part 2 - Elder Care Cafe

In a previous post we talked about the decisions a family must make when they realize their loved one needs additional care. The family should gather to discuss important issues and make decisions based on the needs of the loved on and the needs and ability of family members.

In this second article discussing the question regarding whether relatives can handle the in home care required, we will discuss the support team the aging senior(s) will need when they stay in their own home. It takes a village to keep seniors safe and sound, even when they have?lived in their home for a long time.

First of all, there are certain situations to consider when both parents are still alive and at an advanced age. People are living well into their nineties now and it is conceivable that both your mom and dad will do so. That will open up a whole new set of challenges for family members to have two people to care for rather than just one. Some adult children are finding they have seniors on both the wife and the husband?s side of the family requiring care. That puts an unimaginable strain on a marriage.

As they work through the process of getting care for their family member, what families soon learn is that it takes a team to fully support the elderly. Here are a few of the team members they may want to consider.

Primary care physician. He or she is the first level support and someone you will want to get to know. The primary physician can usually direct you to a myriad of community resources that will make your job as a caregiver much easier. Sometimes they may direct you to one resource, and from there a whole group of options open up. Take advantage of every bit of information you can get so that you can make informed decisions.

In-home care support. Aides and sometimes nursing staff will visit a home on a regular basis depending on the need and to assess the situation. They will discuss with the family what support they offer and what the senior needs, and make informed decisions from the information they receive. Some of the duties they perform have to do with direct patient care, while others help provide respite for the caregiver.

Outside help. Some areas, at least in the United States, have senior centers that will pick up your loved one and take them to a facility where they can spend time with other seniors, eat healthy meals ? usually breakfast and lunch, and see health care workers who will assess their current physical, mental and emotional condition. Staff doctors can prescribe drugs and other items the senior may need.

Family members. The amount of support the elder or the family members need depends on the level of care the senior requires. At the very least, someone should be available to make sure the person is able to get out of bed in the morning, eats healthy meals, and is able to wash and clothe themselves. If they become bedridden, further decisions must be made as to their care.

Additional outside help. Depending on whether the senior is living alone or a caregiver is living in the home as well, they may need someone to clean house, purchase and deliver groceries at least once a week, and perform other in-home care. When the caregiver is a family member, they often have a full time job and must continue with their work hours in order to support the senior and themselves, and pay the bills. That puts an added stress on the caregiver, who then may need to seek the help of others as mentioned above in order to keep food in the refrigerator and the house in good order.

Family members should also consider who will take care of the yard, snow removal, and maintenance issues if the senior(s) is living in their own home. If they are living in an apartment, the level of need for outside help is not as great.

There are a great many decisions family members need to make as their parents age. This article only addresses the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the number of questions that will need to be answered and the amount of resource that is available to seniors depending on where they live. Due diligence in researching and seeking answers to the questions will help everyone involved provide the best care possible to those in need.

Bed bugs found in two NH nursing homes ? Health ? Bangor Daily ...

KEENE, N.H. ? A second Cheshire County nursing home is battling bed bugs.

Representatives with Westwood Care and Rehabilitation Center and officials with the city of Keene confirmed Wednesday the Main Street nursing home facility has bed bugs. A Winchester facility owned by the same company has also been identified as having the bugs.

?We do have bed bugs, and we?re working to eliminate them,? Westwood Administrator Michael Johnson said Thursday.

Meanwhile, a N.H. House subcommittee is examining ways to deal with bed bugs in the state.

The bed bugs in Keene were first discovered Nov. 19, and an exterminator was immediately contacted to address the issue, Johnson said.

?We have had three sightings all isolated to one unit,? he said. A unit consists of multiple rooms.

Johnson said he doesn?t know how the bed bugs got into Westwood, but doesn?t believe their arrival is linked to another nursing center.

Earlier this fall, bed bugs were found at Applewood Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winchester.

Applewood and Westwood are owned by SunBridge Healthcare, which is part of the Sun Healthcare Group Inc.

Westwood is licensed to have 85 residents.

Johnson said educational information about bed bugs has been provided to Westwood residents, families and staff. Families of residents whose rooms were affected were notified, he said.

The educational information included a presentation to explain Westwood?s plan of action to eradicate the bed bugs and data from the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services, he said.

In addition, Westwood staff have been informed of precautions and procedures regarding bed bugs, he said.

Going forward, Westwood ?will continue to follow the guidance of our service provider, and as a precautionary measure, have them perform ongoing checks? for bed bugs, Johnson said.

John Rogers, code and inspections manager for the city of Keene, said his office recorded a complaint about bed bugs at Westwood on Nov. 20, and did an inspection of the facility Nov. 21.

?They already had conducted an inspection of the facility, and found evidence of bed bugs in three or four rooms. They had also contacted a professional company to do inspections and treat for bed bugs,? he said

New Hampshire doesn?t have any regulations pertaining to addressing a bed bug infestation, and because bed bugs don?t carry diseases, an infestation doesn?t have to be reported to local or state health departments.

Rogers said that if his department receives a complaint about a bed bug infestation, it approaches the situation by means of a city ordinance in which infestations aren?t allowed in housing.

?At that point in time, we require the property owner to take care of the situation, and we recommend they use a professional service,? he said.

A property owner would also be required to have a plan to prevent future bed bug infestations, he said.

?We receive about six to 10 complaints about bed bugs a year. We assume this is just the tip of the iceberg,? he said.

Philip J. Alexakos, chief of environmental health and emergency preparedness for Manchester and a representative on the state Legislature?s Bed Bug Subcommittee, said dealing with bed bugs is a complex problem, and one that isn?t easily solved.

?It?s not as simple as putting out a trap or spraying chemicals to get rid of them. It?s an ongoing process,? he said.

Bed bugs were eradicated from the United States after World War II with the use of DDT and other pesticides, he said.

With the use of those chemicals now more controlled, bed bugs developing a resistance to them, and with the increased frequency of people traveling, bed bugs have made a comeback, he said.

The Bed Bug Subcommittee, which is under the N.H. House?s Health and Human Services Oversight Committee, hopes to present a report within the first few months of the new legislative session, he said.

The subcommittee?s work has included collecting state bed bug data and looking at bed bug policies in other states, including New York and Maine, he said.

?Bed bugs are non-discriminating. They just want a blood meal,? he said.

The subcommittee, which grew out of the Bed Bug Action Committee in Manchester, knows that educating people about bed bugs is important to addressing the problem, and informing them of the best practices for dealing with them is key, he said. The state also needs to find a better way to track the problem, he said.

Bedbugs are small, oval insects that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. They often hide in cracks and crevices, and can live in furniture, cushions, mattresses and walls.

Bed bugs can be prevented by inspecting clothing and luggage before it enters a home after a trip, and by checking used clothing and furniture for bugs.

Heat treatments and chemicals applied by an exterminator are the most effective ways to get rid of bed bugs.

?This problem isn?t going away anytime soon,? Alexakos said.

Green Blog: Delhi and Shanghai Aim to Reduce Plastic Trash

HONG KONG ? Two recent items of news from Asia appear to show that the region?s nations are starting to take seriously the ever-growing amounts of plastic trash they produce.

In India, plastic bags, sheets, films and the like were banned in Delhi beginning last week. The city is attempting to rein in the 250,000 tons of plastic waste it generates every year. My colleagues on the India Ink blog have written about the development here.

And beginning in February, the authorities in Shanghai have decided to fine manufacturers that use ?excessive? packaging, according to a recent article in the state-run China Daily newspaper.

The article was thin on details like what would constitute ?excessive? and who would make that determination. But the new regulations permit fines of as much as 50,000 renminbi, or about $8,000.

The China Daily piece also cited a recent poll showing that the vast majority of shoppers in China considered excessive packaging to be both a nuisance and a problem for the environment.

Judging by the ample and often superfluous wrapping that frequently envelops goods in China?and many other countries, consumer goods manufacturers and retailers have not gotten the message; many still appear to consider packaging a selling point they cannot do without.

A fine of 50,000 renminbi may do little to change that.

It is unclear how strictly the new regulations in Shanghai and Delhi will be enforced, or whether they will be extended to other parts of China and India.

Still, overall awareness of plastic pollution has risen in recent years, as I?have written about before.

The sheer amount of plastic that is produced, often to be used just once ? think shampoo bottles and industrial packaging ? is a growing problem. Much of it ends up in landfills or, even worse from an environmental point of view, in rivers or oceans.

Solutions exist, including turning plastic into goods or fuel.

Much of the future increase in global plastic use will occur in developing Asia, where per capita consumption is expected to soar from levels that at the moment are well below those in the West. At the same time, garbage collection and recycling infrastructures remain woefully inadequate.

The initiatives in Shanghai and Delhi thus have global resonance, and their progress will be worth watching.

Crucial Info for DIY Home Improvement Projects - the great company ...

DIY home improvement has become a more likable thing in the recent past. One explanation is that individuals are trying to find options for cutting costs on their home repairs, remodeling and other projects. Sometimes, it is vital to hire a contractor, although it can cost a lot of money. In this article, we'll be looking at some important factors to keep in mind if you're planning to handle your own home improvement plans.

Your budget is the most important thing to think about before you actually take on any kind of DIY project. It is incredibly important that, before you begin any actual work on a project, you figure out an estimated cost point. Always assume that the actual cost of the project is going to be higher than your original estimate by at least ten percent. It just about always works out this way. There are always going to be things you don't expect that pop up and increase the costs of your projects. You may need more materials than you thought, you might make a mistake that has to be corrected, or you might discover an additional problem that needs to be addressed.

While this is all appropriate to your discovery, a few items about home improvement carry more weight than others. But that can vary a bit, and it really just will depend on how you want to use the information. We really are just getting started here, and hopefully you will be excited about what more is in store. We are saving the best for last, and you will be pleased at what you will find out. What you are about to read will significantly enhance your knowledge, and we will go even beyond that point, too.

If you want to change the look of your home, and can afford it, then remodel your kitchen. Just because you can't afford to remodel the whole kitchen, doesn't mean that you can't make a bunch of little changes. If you can't afford to get new cabinets, the door knobs and hinges could be replaced, along with the doors. Maybe the only thing you can replace is the countertops with a low-cost laminate that is attractive. Some of your kitchen appliances may also need replacing, especially if they're not energy-efficient. Repainting your kitchen in a new color can also have a dramatic effect, and make your cabinets look new.

Flooring is one area that will offer you all sorts of options for DIY projects. There are all sorts of possibilities here for new floors that do not cost a whole lot or require lots of previous experience to complete. For example, even if you have zero experience here, laminate wood floors are pretty easy to install. The pieces will snap together and there isn't any need to do any surface refinishing. While this kind of flooring isn't as sturdy as the flooring made from more expensive materials, this will still offer your home a much better look especially when what you want is new floors. You could also choose vinyl for your floors since it comes in lots of different styles and colors. Vinyl is super simple because the tiles will come with some self adhesive backing on them.

There are plenty of reasons that you might want to take on a home improvement project or two. Maybe there are some repairs that have needed doing for quite a long time, maybe you want to put in an addition or maybe you just want to offer your home a new and fresh look. Either way, if you get the right tools and materials and follow the necessary steps, there's no reason why your DIY home improvement project won't be a success.

Metabolic protein launches sugar feast that nurtures brain tumors

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have tracked down a cancer-promoting protein's pathway into the cell nucleus and discovered how, once there, it fires up a glucose metabolism pathway on which brain tumors thrive.

They also found a vital spot along the protein's journey that can be attacked with a type of drug not yet deployed against glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and lethal form of brain cancer. Published online by Nature Cell Biology, the paper further illuminates the importance of pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) in cancer development and progression.

"PKM2 is very active during infancy, when you want rapid cell growth, and eventually it turns off. Tumor cells turn PKM2 back on - it's overexpressed in many types of cancer," said Zhimin Lu, M.D., Ph.D., the paper's senior author and an associate professor in MD Anderson's Department of Neuro-Oncology.

Lu and colleagues showed earlier this year that PKM2 in the nucleus also activates a variety of genes involved in cell division. The latest paper shows how it triggers aerobic glycolysis, processing glucose into energy, also known as the Warburg effect, upon which many types of solid tumors rely to survive and grow.

"PKM2 must get to the nucleus to activate genes involved in cell proliferation and the Warburg effect," Lu said. "If we can keep it out of the nucleus, we can block both of those cancer-promoting pathways. PKM2 could be an Achilles' heel for cancer."

By pinpointing the complicated steps necessary for PKM2 to penetrate the nucleus, Lu and colleagues found a potentially druggable target that could keep the protein locked in the cell's cytoplasm.

MEK, ERK emerge as targets

The process begins when the epidermal growth factor connects to its receptor on the cell surface. This leads to:

  • Activation of the MEK protein, which in turn activates ERK.
  • ERK sticking a phosphate group to a specific spot on PKM2.
  • Phosphorylation priming PKM2 for a series of steps that culminate in its binding to the protein importin, which lives up to its name by taking PKM2 through the nuclear membrane.

Once in the nucleus, the team showed that PKM2 activates two genes crucial to aerobic glycolysis and another that splices PKM RNA to make even more PKM2.

An experiment applying several kinase-inhibiting drugs to human glioblastoma cell lines showed that only a MEK/ERK inhibitor prevented EGF-induced smuggling of PKM2 into the nucleus. ERK activation then is mandatory for PKM2 to get into the nucleus.

"MEK/ERK inhibitors have not been tried yet in glioblastoma multiforme," Lu said. Phosporylated PKM2 is a potential biomarker to identify patients who are candidates for MEK/ERK inhibitors once those drugs are developed.

MEK inhibitor blocks tumor growth

The researchers also found that the two glycolysis genes activated by PKM2, called GLUT1 and LDHA, are required for glucose consumption and conversion of pyruvate to lactate, crucial factors in the Warburg Effect. Depleting PKM2 in tumor cell lines reduced glucose consumption and lactate production.

In mice, depleting PKM2 blocked the growth of brain tumors. Re-expressing the wild type protein caused tumors to grow. However, re-expression of a PKM2 mutant protein that lost its ability to get into the nucleus failed to promote tumor formation. Experiments in human glioblastoma cell lines showed the same effect.

Injecting the MEK inhibitor selumetinib into tumors inhibited tumor growth, reduced ERK phosphorylation, PKM2 expression and lactate production in mice. In 48 human tumor samples, the team found that activity of EGFR, ERK1/2 and PKM2 were strongly correlated.

Cause of PKM2 overexpression

Lu and colleagues also published a paper in Molecular Cell that revealed a mechanism for overexpression of PKM2 in glioblastoma. They found that EGF receptor activation turns on NF-?B, which leads to a series of events culminating in PKM2 gene activation.

PKM2 levels were measured in tumor samples from 55 glioblastoma patients treated with standard of care surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The 20 with low PKM2 expression had a median survival of 34.5 months, compared to 13.6 months for the 35 patients with high levels of PKM2.

Level of PKM2 expression in 27 low-grade astrocytomas was about half of the expression found in higher grade glioblastomas.

"In these two papers, we show how PKM2 is overexpressed in tumors, how it gets into the nucleus, that nuclear entry is essential to tumor development, and identified potential drugs and a biomarker that could usefully treat people," Lu said.

HBT: Twins trade Span to Nats for prospect

Denard Span has been linked to the Nationals in trade rumors dating back to mid-2011 and the Twins finally pulled the trigger today, sending the 28-year-old center fielder to Washington for pitching prospect Alex Meyer.

Span fits what the Nationals were looking for both offensively and defensively, as he?s a prototypical leadoff man with good on-base skills and speed who covers plenty of ground in center field. This year he hit .283 with a .342 on-base percentage in 128 games and Span has a career OBP of .357. He?s under team control through 2015 at reasonable prices, making $20.25 million over the three seasons.

Meyer was the Nationals? first-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Kentucky and the 6-foot-9 right-hander with a mid-90s fastball had a strong pro debut this year, throwing 129 innings with a 2.86 ERA and 139/45 K/BB ratio between two levels of Single-A. He?s certainly not MLB-ready yet, but could be ready at some point in 2014 and the Twins have been desperate to find some hard-throwing starters with top-of-the-rotation potential.

Span will take over as the Nationals? center fielder and leadoff man, allowing Bryce Harper to play a corner spot full time and perhaps signaling the end of Adam LaRoche?s time in Washington. Ben Revere will replace Span as the Twins? center fielder and will likely get every chance to become Minnesota?s leadoff man despite a .319 career on-base percentage though age 24.

UN court acquits former Kosovo prime minister

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? A U.N. war crimes tribunal on Thursday acquitted the former prime minister of Kosovo and two of his former Kosovo Liberation Army comrades for the second time of murdering and torturing Serbs and their supporters in Kosovo's war for independence.

The verdicts came in the U.N. court's first ever retrial, which was ordered after appeals judges branded the 2008 acquittal of former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj and KLA fighter Idriz Balaj and the conviction of a third KLA commander, Lahi Brahimaj a "miscarriage of justice" because of widespread intimidation of prosecution witnesses.

The acquittals clear the way for a return to the political scene for Haradinaj, seen before his 2005 indictment as a unifying force in deeply divided Kosovo, but could complicate talks between Pristina and Belgrade on Kosovo's future.

His British lawyer, Ben Emmerson, confirmed that Haradinaj wants to return to power.

"With the consent of the people, he will soon be resuming his rightful position as the political leader of the country," Emmerson told reporters at the court.

Emmerson said Haradinaj told him he wants to lead a government representing all ethnic groups in Kosovo. "It is time, he says, for reconciliation."

Applause rang around the courtroom's public gallery, packed with supporters of the three defendants, when Presiding Judge Bakone Moloto delivered the vedicts.

In Kosovo's capital, Pristina, supporters set off fireworks and honked car horns. Others danced and clapped as they watched the verdicts on a giant screen.

The three men were to be released and returned to Kosovo later Thursday.

"Finally, after eight long years and two lengthy trials, this tribunal has done justice to Ramush Haradinaj, to his co-accused and to the people of Kosovo," Emmerson said.

Moloto said Serbs and their suspected supporters were beaten at a KLA compound in Kosovo and at least one of them died of his injuries. However, he said that there was no evidence Haradinaj was involved in the attacks or was part of a criminal conspiracy to mistreat civilians as a way of consolidating KLA control of part of Kosovo.

In fact, Moloto said, Haradinaj reprimanded one KLA fighter for abusing a Kosovo Albanian man, telling the fighter: "No such thing should happen anymore because this is damaging our cause."

Another witness told the court Haradinaj gave him food and accommodation before releasing him to his family.

Haradinaj quit as Kosovo's prime minister in 2005 after just 100 days in office when his indictment was announced by the tribunal, but he remains popular at home.

In Kosovo, large posters welcoming him back were hung well before the decision was announced in The Hague. Speculation was rife that Haradinaj would join the country's ruling coalition of former fellow fighter but current political rival, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci as he looks to broaden the range of participants and share public responsibility in crucial talks with Serbia.

For Haradinaj's Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, which has been in decline since his trial, the return could herald a new era.

"We do hope that he will take a lot of opportunities and a lot of management in the state because we see that Kosovo has huge challenges ahead and therefore he has a role to play," said Besnik Tahiri, an official in Haradinaj's AAK party. "Hopefully he will continue where he was when he left (as PM) in 2005."

Serbian officials and media had been anticipating for days that Haradinaj would be acquitted less than two weeks after two Croatian generals were cleared of charges of killing and deporting Serbs in a 1995 military blitz, a judgment that sparked rage in Belgrade, where many see the tribunal as anti-Serb.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said before Thursday's announcement that Haradinaj's acquittal would have serious consequences for the EU-brokered negotiations between him and his Kosovo counterpart Thaci. But Dacic suggested that Serbia would not pull out of the talks that are expected to resume in early December.

"There are enough reasons to delay or cancel all that, but what would we gain? Nothing." Dacic has said. "We are not participating in the talks as a favor to someone, we are doing it for ourselves."

Serbia's government spokesman Milivoje Mihajlovic called the verdicts "another heavy blow for justice, dialogue and reconciliation in the region," and predicted they would trigger a storm of discontent among Serbs, particularly those in Kosovo.

"Haradinaj's acquittal means an amnesty for crimes against Serbs," he said.

Belgrade's liberal radio and TV station B-92 carried the headline, "A fresh slap in the face: Haradinaj freed."

Macau Open Badminton GP Gold: Kana Ito sends Ngan Yi Cheung packing in Women?s Singles first round

Japan?s one of the most promising shuttlers Kana Ito showed a great performance in the arena when she stamped her mark over Hong Kong?s Ngan Yi Cheung in Women?s Singles first round at Kumpoo Macau Open Badminton GP Gold 2012 in Macau, on Wednesday, November 28.

The un-seeded Ito, who has been putting up good show in recent tournament, played with tremendous precision and managed to send Ngan Yi packing after a little wobble.

Japanese shuttler had to employ all of her skills to snatch the opening game from her opponent. She continued playing positive badminton and took the second game to end up the match in straight games with a close margin.

In the meanwhile, Ngan Yi played to her maximum potential in the arena and kept on troubling her Japanese challenger in both games but remained unlucky in the ending points and lost the battle with a respectable score.

A spectacular fight started from the initial points of first game and progressed closely without showing any mercy to each other in the arena.

Ito tried her best to create a reasonable gap on the board but she failed to push her rival on back foot and both of them stayed close on the board until the end of opening half.

After the mid-game interval, the in-form Ito accelerated her speed in all areas of the court but again failed to take even a small lead as her Hong Kong challenger was also playing in the similar fashion.

The score reached at 21-21 when Ito showed her brilliance and managed to claim two consecutive points and won the set with a dramatic 23-21 score on the board.

In the following set, both shuttlers again put in extra effort to dominate the pace of rallies in the opening half but none of them could manage it until the one-minute break.

After the interval, Ito played positive badminton by taking the bird early from all corners of the court and managed to end up the game with a close 21-19 score on the board.

The impressive Japanese shuttler bagged a narrow victory in first round encounter against Ngan Yi with a tight margin of 23-21 and 21-19.

Despite troubles at home, Egypt's Morsi is pivotal player in Mideast

The truce is strained when Israeli forces fire on a protest by Palestinians seeking access to fertile land close to the Gaza border. NBC's Ayman Moyheldin reports

?

By Jim Maceda, NBC News

CAIRO ??It was no Black Friday in Gaza, where the cease-fire was in effect for a second day.

There was some bloodshed ? Israeli soldiers fired on Palestinian farmers who wandered into the prohibited 'buffer zone' near the border check on their farmland ? but otherwise the first phase of the truce has worked.

Now the difficult part begins: Turning a halt in hostilities into a better future for Palestinians and Israelis.

In the near term, that will mean hard negotiations mediated by Egypt?s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Israel insists on a stoppage of weapons smuggling through Gaza's Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Hamas demands the lifting of the 6-year-old blockade of Gaza which some say has turned the strip into an "open prison".

Both sides this week agreed in principle to these concessions, but left the details for later. That could take a while, but what's different now is the presence of Morsi ? backed by the United States ? in the process.

A Palestinian farmer was killed and ten more were injured trying to reach farmland along the Israeli-Gaza border. The Israeli military is prohibiting farmers from reaching their land in the Palestinian side of the border, putting strain an already tense cease-fire agreement. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Although facing widespread criticism at home, where he is accused of a constitutional power grab, Morsi is a formidable mediator having been endorsed as a key regional player by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Egyptian protesters, police clash as Morsi defends wide new powers

He's the leader of an Arab state with influence over radical Palestinian groups like Hamas, seems determined to be a U.S. ally and seeks a civil, if more formal, relationship with Israel.

So, rather than locking horns, separating, and reloading to fight another day, Israel and Hamas will at least have someone they respect to complain to.

The hope is that, over time, negotiations and not rocket fire or airstrikes will become the new habit of "discourse" between enemies. That could be a pipe dream unless Morsi, the Mediator, becomes Morsi, the Enforcer, as well. Will he crack down on the smuggling? Destroy the tunnels? Or will he side with his "ideological cousins" inside Hamas?

Fresh from winning praise for brokering the Gaza cease-fire, Mohammed Morsi sets Egyptian politics ablaze by granting himself sweeping new powers. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

It's too soon to say. For now, few on either side of the Gaza border doubt that this truce will be short lived. As Gazans celebrated the end of their immediate suffering, a poll showed that 70 percent of Israelis disagree with the truce. After generations of bloodshed and crisis, mistrust is deeply entrenched.

It is significant that Obama seems to believe that Morsi can be the "missing link" that moves that moribund peace process forward. On Wednesday, when he thanked the Egyptian president for his "commitment to regional security" following the announcement of the cease-fire, Obama added that he and Morsi agreed to work towards a "more durable solution" to the situation in Gaza.

Morsi may be just the partner with leverage over the Palestinians that Obama needs to try his hand at Middle East peace-making himself.

But first, Morsi will have to prove he can enforce a cease-fire as deftly as he brokered one.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin A beautiful skin does not need expensive skin care products. It rather needs adequate care and attention on a regular basis. By ?adequate care and attention?, we mean taking care of skin according to the changing weather, lifestyle and age specific needs on a constant basis. Here, we present you 10 most effective skin care tips that will stand your skin in good stead forever.

Skin Care Tips for Glowing Skin

Use Sunscreen

Unprotected exposure to sunlight leads to premature ageing, hyper pigmentation, wrinkles and even skin cancer. Sunburns and tans indicate a damaged skin which needs to be shielded with sunscreen on regular basis. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the year, which protects your skin from both ? UVA and UVB rays.

Apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to stepping out of home on all the exposed parts of your body. Even when you stay indoors, don?t forget to slather your daily dose of sunscreen.

Moisturize Properly

A dry skin is a sure shot guarantee of prematurely old and sagging skin. If you want your skin to be taut and youthful than it is very important to moisturize your skin. Even if you don?t have a dry skin, it will be good to moisturize yourself with a water based lotion on regular basis. If you have dry skin than you can go for oil based moisturizer immediately after bath when the skin is still moist and is able to hold the moisture for longer periods.

On the other hand, in order to provide moisture from environment to your skin when it gets too dry, it is important to run a humidifier in the room, especial in the bed room at night time. Besides, always ensure to use some good quality moisturizing soaps and hand washes to avoid dryness on hands.

Exfoliate Regularly

If your skin is very dry than it will be wise to exfoliate once in a week. Exfoliation helps in unclogging the blocked pores, remove dead skin cells and helps in better absorption of moisturizer.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin

Too much of exfoliation can lead to damaged skin so be gentle with your skin while exfoliating. If you have normal to oily skin than you can exfoliate up to two times a week. Use a good quality moisturizer immediately after exfoliating for a glowing skin.

Sleep with a Makeup Free Face

To sleep with make up on is one of the biggest beauty crimes. Never sleep with make up on your face because it leads to clogging of pores, oxygen deprived and lifeless skin and premature ageing of facial skin. Always use a good quality face wash for removing the makeup. For removing eye makeup, use baby oil or cleanser meant for removing eye makeup.

Eat Nutritious Foods

Basically how our skin looks depends on our genes, our environment and our food. While we can?t do much about our environment and our genes, we can certainly take care of our food and can dramatically change the texture of our skin and can look beautiful.

This can be achieved by eating low fat and highly nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, lean meats, low fat sea foods, etc. Cutting on refined flours, sugar, cigarettes and alcohol can make a dramatic difference to our looks. Foods containing vitamin C, E, A and H are especially beneficial for our skin since these vitamins are building blocks of our skin.

Exercise Consistently

While everyone knows that exercising is good for health, not everyone is aware that consistency in exercises is very important for getting best results. You should exercise at least 4 times a week for 45 minutes.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin

Exercising helps in removing toxins from the body, releases endorphins- the feel good chemicals in body, helps in melting the fat and gives our skin a natural glow which cannot be achieved through cosmetics or beauty products. You can include a variety of exercises in your fitness regimen like aerobics, yoga, strength training, Pilates, stretches, cardio-vascular exercises like jogging, running, swimming, etc.

Stay Away from Stress

No amount of beauty products can improve a stressed skin and hence the best beauty bet is to stay away from stress. Somehow, this seems to be impossible in today?s age of hectic lifestyles. In such a scenario, learn to manage stress. You can learn meditation, breathing exercises or can enroll in one of your favorite hobbies to stay away from stress. A stress free skin can ooze real beauty and glow and can make your friends envy with you.

Father thankful his family escaped fire that destroyed their home and ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A metro family lost their home and business in a fire Thursday, but is giving thanks they survived the blaze.

?That is a blessing, and that is the main thing," said homeowner Luther Walker. "We have our lives and our health and we got our dog."

He and his wife run a small concrete and construction business from their home. He's not sure what effect this fire will have on the couple?s ability to continue work.

The fire started around 9:45 a.m. at the Walker home in the 3400 block of Delavan in Kansas City, Kan., just off of I-635.

Walker said that even though his home-based concrete business was destroyed along with the 100-plus-year-old house, he?s thankful he and his family are alive.

Also inside the home were Walker?s wife, their teenage daughter, a son home from school at Kansas State University and the family dog, Brownie.

Nobody was injured.

KCK Fire Chief Craig Duke said an electrical issue is believed to have caused the fire. He said the family reported the lights had been flickering lately in the home when the wind blew.

?He did indicate they were doing some electrical work. They had some electrical issues: flickering lights and some other issues," Duke said. "They had an electrician out trying to find what the issue was.?

Wind played a factor in fire crews? strategies.?

?Our crews got inside and as they got inside, the fire started pushing them back, the wind picked up," he explained.

Because of the swift wind and age of the building, firefighters had to fight the blaze from outside of the building?s perimeter.

The exception, no doubt, is Linda Birnbaum, the toxicologist who leads, two little-known scientific agencies, the National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP).

Last April, Birnbaum sat inside a Capitol Hill conference room packed with poker-faced chemical industry executives ready for a showdown. The NTP had recently issued its report on carcinogens?a sort of name-and-shame list of chemicals on which no company wants to find its products. Charles Maresca of the Small Business Administration?taking a stand for the maligned styrene industry?argued that the report was "based on inaccurate scientific information" and faulty peer review.

North Carolina congressman Brad Miller (D) was unimpressed. He took the microphone and described Birnbaum's resume of more than 700 publications in public health, toxicology and environmental science. Removing his black reading glasses, he glanced at Maresca, and delivered the fatal blow with relish: "And you're a lawyer. Isn't that right?"

If Birnbaum got a kick out of the put-down, she didn?t show it. After 33 years working as a federal scientist at both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the NIEHS, Birnbaum's career is a study in the way science becomes law and the ways lobbyists subvert science. She has watched her contributions to an EPA report on dioxin sit in limbo for 20 years, she has worked to study the health impacts of types of asbestos that are not legally recognized as asbestos and she has challenged the chemical industry in her pursuit for answers about the controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA).

Through her leadership at NIEHS and NTP over the past three years, she has pursued a broad vision of environmental health that incorporates gene?environment interactions along with the impacts of disease, diet, stress and other factors. She has also tried to make the NIEHS quick on its feet: After the 2010 BP oil spill, she initiated the Gulf Long-Term Follow-Up (GuLF) study, the first extended review of the health effects of an oil spill.

Scientific American sat down with Birnbaum in Washington, D.C., to learn more about environmental health, toxic chemistry and the politics of chemical regulation.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

How did you become interested in toxicology?
When I was in eighth grade at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School in Teaneck, New Jersey, I had a science teacher who was an attractive, peppy, young blonde woman who was also the cheerleading coach. I was a cheerleader, and that positive reinforcement made it okay to like science.

I became interested in thyroid hormones. I can't tell you exactly why, but I had written to a local pharmaceutical company and asked if they could give me some rats and some chemicals. That's something that would never happen easily today?but they did it! I got a letter from them that said, "Please come. We'd like to talk to you." The next thing I knew, I had 40 rats in four cages and feed and bedding and everything else, along with thyroid hormone and chemicals that block thyroid hormone.

They let you keep the rats at your house?
Yeah. We had them in my basement.

What did your parents say about that?
My parents were really incredibly supportive?even when one escaped. I eventually found its body and put it in the freezer figuring I'd dissect it at some point. But my grandmother went in thinking it was a package of ground beef. She had a little bit of a fright.

How much of human disease is due to environmental exposures?
The estimates vary, and it depends on how you define environment. People often say it's about 30 percent. I think that's defining environment fairly narrowly, considering only environmental chemical exposures, but your environment includes the food you eat, the drugs you take, the psychosocial stress you're exposed to and so forth. After all, what's the difference between a drug and an environmental chemical? One you intentionally take and the other one you don't. Considering all that, I would say then the environment is much more than 30 percent.

We also know?especially from studies of identical versus fraternal twins?that for many different diseases, genetics is not the whole story. Actually, I think it's time to stop asking, "Is this caused by genes or is this caused by the environment?" because in almost all cases, it's going to be both.

Why has it been so difficult to link environmental exposures to specific health consequences?
Nobody is exposed to one chemical at a time, right? I mean we live in a soup of chemicals and we live in a soup of exposures. Here, I'm having a lemonade. Well, it's not only lemon in here. I'm sure there's some sugar. There might be a preservative or something. I don't know what's in this. So think of all those things interacting, but when we test chemicals in the lab we tend to test them one at a time.

I guess we don't consider these other types of exposures.
Right. A high-fat diet, for example, can completely change the way your body handles chemicals. Exposure to a certain chemical may lower your ability to respond to an infection. At EPA we did a lot of studies exposing rats and mice to air pollutants and then to bacterial infections or influenza infections. Those who were exposed to pollution were more likely to die, whereas those in clean air recovered.
