Pope calls for responsible, credible climate deal (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI has urged this week's U.N. climate change conference in South Africa to craft a responsible and credible deal to cut greenhouse gases that takes into account the needs of the poor.

Government ministers from more than 100 countries are expected to attend the final sessions of the two-week conference that opens Monday in Durban. The immediate focus is the pending expiry of the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 agreement requiring 37 industrialized countries to slash carbon emissions to 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Benedict said Sunday he hoped the international community would "agree on a responsible and credible response to this worrisome and complex phenomenon, taking into account the needs of the poorest and future generations."

Sure you can.
And actually, I play trombone too. ^^ That's why the first time I tried this roleplay I got a little sad that no one wanted to pick the trombone player...

Screen Grabs: Covert Affairs exposes secret Rogers service in Washington DC

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Fans of USA's Covert Affairs know that Annie Walker's stomping ground is Washington DC, where she pretends to be a buyer for the Smithsonian. So, there's only two plausible explanations for her iPhone 4 being able to connect to Rogers Wireless Canadian network: Either she's got a nuclear powered antenna on that thing, or the company is running a south-of-the-border service for Government agencies. Some might point out that the show is filmed in Toronto for cost purposes and the art directors aren't too hot at spotting continuity errors, but we'd dismiss that as paranoid fantasy.

[Thanks, Mike G]

FILE - In this March 25, 2010, file photo, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, left, and associate head basketball coach Bernie Fine sit on the bench at the end an NCAA West Regional semifinal college basketball game against Butler in Salt Lake City. Fine was fired Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, in the wake of an investigation of child molestation allegations against him. In statement released Sunday night, Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice president for public affairs, says Fine has been "terminated, effective immediately." (AP Photo/Steve C. Wilson, File)

(AP) ? Bernie Fine was fired Sunday by Syracuse University after a third man accused the assistant basketball coach of molesting him nine years ago.

"At the direction of Chancellor Cantor, Bernie Fine's employment with Syracuse University has been terminated, effective immediately," Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice president for public affairs, said in a statement.

The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I.

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, said Sunday that he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

He was the third accuser to come forward in the investigation of child molestation allegations against Fine.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said he supported the university's decision to fire his longtime assistant and expressed regret for his initial statements that might have been "insensitive to victims of abuse.

"The allegations that have come forth today are disturbing and deeply troubling," Boeheim said in a statement released by the school. "I am personally very shocked because I have never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. I believe the university took the appropriate step tonight. What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse."

Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations "patently false."

Tomaselli, who faces sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he signed an affidavit accusing Fine following a meeting with Syracuse police last week in Albany.

Tomaselli's father, meanwhile, maintains his son is lying.

Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis told ESPN that the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four.

Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in fifth or sixth grade.

When the accusations first became public Nov. 17, Boeheim adamantly defended his lifelong friend.

In an interview that day with the Post-Standard, Boeheim attacked Davis' reasons for going public with his accusations.

"The Penn State thing came out, and the kid behind this is trying to get money," Boeheim said. "He's tried before. And now he's trying again. If he gets this, he's going to sue the university and Bernie. What do you think is going to happen at Penn State? You know how much money is going to be involved in civil suits? I'd say about $50 million. That's what this is about. Money."

No one answered the door at the Fine home Sunday. Before Fine's firing, his attorneys released a statement saying Fine would not comment beyond his initial statement.

"Any comment from him would only invite and perpetuate ancient and suspect claims," attorneys Donald Martin and Karl Sleight said. "Mr. Fine remains hopeful of a credible and expeditious review of the relevant issues by law enforcement authorities."

Tomaselli said the scandal at Penn State involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky prompted him to come forward. Sandusky is accused in a grand jury indictment of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.

Amid the child sex-abuse scandal, Penn State's trustees ousted longtime football coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier. The trustees said Spanier and Paterno, who is not the target of any criminal investigation, failed to act after a graduate assistant claimed he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in a campus shower in 2002. Former school administrators Tim Curley ? who is on administrative leave ? and Gary Schultz are charged with not properly alerting authorities to suspected abuse and with perjury. They maintain their innocence.

"It was the Sandusky stuff that came out that really made me think about it," Tomaselli said in the phone interview. "A lot of people were slamming ESPN and Bobby for saying anything. I wanted to come out. ... It made me sick to see all that support for Fine at that point. I was positive he was guilty."

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he didn't ask Syracuse police or federal authorities for help in getting the criminal charges dismissed against him in Maine.

Tomaselli was arrested in April on 11 warrants charging gross sexual assault, tampering with a victim, two counts of unlawful sexual contact, five counts of visual sexual aggression against a child and unlawful sexual touching and unlawful sexual contact, Lewiston police said Sunday. They did not say what led to the charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard he met Fine after he and his father, Fred, attended a Syracuse autograph session on campus in late 2001.

The newspaper reported that Fine later called Tomaselli's parents to arrange for Tomaselli to go to Pittsburgh with the athletic department staff on a chartered bus, spend the night in Fine's hotel room and attend the team's game on Jan. 22, 2002.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he had dinner with the team, then returned to the hotel room where he accused Fine of putting porn on the TV and fondling him in bed.

Tomaselli attended the basketball game the next day, sitting several rows behind the bench, and rode the chartered bus back to Syracuse, the newspaper reported.

"The one time there was multiple incidents in that one night, but there was only one night that he ever sexually abused me," Tomaselli told the AP.

However, during a phone interview with the AP, Fred Tomaselli said: "I'm 100 percent sure that Bernie Fine was never in contact with Zach. He never went to Pittsburgh to a game, never been to that arena."

"I brought him to a couple of games in Syracuse. We always sat in the nosebleed section and left after the game. He never stayed for any overnighters and never even got within shouting distance of Bernie."

During his long career with Syracuse, Fine tutored the likes of Derrick Coleman, LeRon Ellis and John Wallace in his role of working with post players. Coleman was the top pick in the 1990 NBA draft, Ellis was the Clippers' 22nd overall choice in 1991, and Wallace was picked 18th in 1996 by the New York Knicks.

Boeheim and Fine met at Syracuse University in 1963, when Fine was student manager of the basketball team. Fine graduated in 1967 with a degree in personal and industrial relations and went into business for himself.

In 1970, Fine was named basketball and football coach at Lincoln Junior High in Syracuse and went to Henninger High School the next year as the junior varsity basketball coach. He became varsity basketball coach in 1975. When Boeheim was chosen to succeed Roy Danforth at Syracuse in 1976 Boeheim offered Fine a job as an assistant.

Fine was an integral part of the staff that guided Syracuse to the national championship in 2003. During his tenure the Orange also made two other appearances in the NCAA title game, losing in 1987 to Indiana and in 1996 to Kentucky. He also guided the U.S. Maccabiah team to a silver medal at the 1993 World Maccabiah Games in Israel and has served as director of a successful basketball camp in the Northeast.

The Post-Standard also reported that Zach Tomaselli was invited by Fine to a party at his home after the Syracuse-Pitt game on Feb. 1, 2003 ? a game where Zach Tomaselli said Fine arranged seats for him and his father several rows behind the bench.

Tomaselli told the newspaper his father, who was unable to attend the party, allowed him to go to Fine's house and stay the night.

While there, Tomaselli told the AP, Fine asked him to get into bed and that Fine's wife, Laurie, was there when it happened.

"I told them (police) that Laurie was standing right there when Bernie asked me to sleep in a bed. Laurie knew all about it," he said during the phone interview.

On Sunday, ESPN played an audiotape, obtained and recorded by Davis, of an October 2002 telephone conversation between him and Laurie Fine.

Davis told ESPN he made the recording, which also has been given to Syracuse police, without her knowledge because he knew he needed proof for the police to believe his accusations. ESPN said it hired a voice recognition expert to verify the voice on the tape and the network said it was determined to be that of Laurie Fine.

Davis also acknowledged in an interview with ESPN that he and Laurie Fine had a sexual relationship when he was 18, and that he eventually told Bernie Fine about it.

"I thought he was going to kill me, but I had to tell him," Davis said. "It didn't faze him one bit."

During the call to the woman, Davis repeatedly asks her what she knew about the alleged molestation.

"Do you think I'm the only one that he's ever done that to?" Davis asked.

"No ... I think there might have been others but it was geared to ... there was something about you," the woman on the tape said.

On the tape, she also says she knew "everything that went on."

"Bernie has issues, maybe that he's not aware of, but he has issues. ... And you trusted somebody you shouldn't have trusted ... "

During the call, Davis tells her he asked her husband in the late 1990s for $5,000 to help pay off his student loans.

"When he gave you the money, what does he want for that?" she asked.

He tells her that Fine wanted to engage in sexual activity in several ways.

"... And I'd try to go away, and he'd put his arm on top of my chest. He goes, 'If you want this money, you'll stay right here,'" Davis said.

"Right. Right," she said. "He just has a nasty attitude, because he didn't get his money, nor did he get what he wanted."

On Friday, federal authorities carried out a search at his Fine's suburban Syracuse home but declined to comment on what they were looking for.

New York State Police spokesman Jack Keller said troopers were called to assist the U.S. attorney's office at the search. At least six police vehicles were parked on the street during the search, which lasted around nine hours. Officers carted away three file cabinets and a computer for further examination.

Receding floods reveal crocs lurking in Bangkok (AP)

BANGKOK, Thailand ? Murky floodwaters are receding from Bangkok's inundated outskirts to reveal some scary swamp dwellers who moved in while flooded residents were moving out ? including crocodiles and some of the world's most poisonous snakes.

Special teams from the Thai Fishery Department have responded to numerous reports of reptilian menaces, like the 3-foot-long (meter-long) croc that Anchalee Wannawet saw sitting next to the outhouse one morning, its toothy jaw wide open.

"I ran away, and it ran into there," the 23-year-old said, pointing toward the reedy swamp behind the construction site where she works in Bangkok's northern Sai Mai district. "I haven't dared to go the bathroom since. I'm peeing in a can."

Thailand has long been a center for the breeding, exporting and trafficking of exotic animals, especially crocodiles. Farmed both legally and illegally, crocs are popular because of the value they fetch for their meat, bones and especially their skins, used to make luxury bags and accessories.

This year's record monsoon rains, which prompted Thailand's worst flooding in a half century and killed more than 600 people, also swamped some of the country's estimated 3,000 crocodile farms. Many of the reptiles escaped ? though probably not as many as residents think they are seeing around the city.

"We get a lot of reports at the Fishery Department, but only about 5 to 10 percent of them turn out to be true," said Praphan Lipayakun, a fishery department official, adding that many false reports end up being large monitor lizards, which are generally shy and harmless.

"We even get reports of people being bitten, but when we follow up, we can't get in touch with the supposed patient, or when contacted, the doctor that treated the wound says that it in no way resembled a crocodile bite."

Still, officials and volunteer veterinarians have confirmed many flood-affected animals on the loose or in distress ? and not only reptiles.

A team of volunteer veterinarians rescued scores of animals ? from deer and Capuchin monkeys to lions, tigers and bears ? from the yards and homes of Thailand's rich.

"Most of the ones we found in the Bangkok area are privately owned, and a lot of them are for fun or for pleasure ? like a farm or some exotic species in the house," said Nantarika Chansue, president of the Zoo and Wildlife Veterinary Society of Thailand and a member of the team of volunteers.

"Some of the owners left home already and left the animals in the cage as the water rose. Some of them have illegal animals and are afraid of being prosecuted, so they are afraid to tell us and just leave them there."

Some of the rescued animals had had to be treated for respiratory diseases from inhaling disease-infested floodwaters, Nantarika said.

Calls about snakes have spiked from the usual two per day to about 10, said Sompob Sridaranop, a snake rescue expert from the Thai Marine Department. Most residents report pythons ? but occasionally the calls are about highly venomous cobras and pit vipers, he said.

"A lot of snakes are coming out now because they, too, are flooded. Their homes are usually under houses, or in pipes, but they can't sleep in the water, so they are escaping," he said.

In Nakhon Sawan province, north of Bangkok, Anan Dirath said his family found about 10 nonpoisonous snakes in the house since the waters receded, while his neighbors found cobras, which they caught and sold for their meat.

In Bangkok's Sai Mai district, not far from where Anchalee spotted the crocodile, a large zoo called Safari World was flooded, endangering primates, giraffes, dolphins and other exotic animals in captivity. At the height of the flooding, zoo official Litti Kewkacha said staff were piling up earth, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to stay higher than the flood levels.

Crocodile farms were not so successful at keeping their wards safe in captivity.

Since the floods began in July, the Fishery Department's crocodile teams have captured 10 that have escaped and found their way into residential areas in Bangkok and suburbs just to the north. Some have been easy catches: Residents had closed them into fenced yards.

Then there are those like the one Anchalee saw, lurking in areas that are boxed in, but large, and with plenty of vegetation for cover. That one proved a special challenge for the crocodile chasers.

"These are its footprints. It's around here," Praphan said under a mid-afternoon sun.

As the team toured the area's perimeter by boat, 42-year-old crocodile zoo performer and volunteer Chalaew Busamrong concurred that the trapped animal must be a crocodile.

"It has been floating around here a long time," Chalaew said. "It can't find its way out. If it were a monitor lizard, it would have found its way out by now."

The team decided that the area was too wide and wild to try to close in on the beast, so they baited their giant-sized hooks with raw chicken carcasses. It's a tactic with an often-inconclusive result, because if local residents find a trapped crocodile, they're likely to grab it and sell it.

"We've left bait before in other areas, but because crocodiles are so valuable, we're never sure if they are captured or not," Praphan said.

As they attached the wires to nearby trees in the swamp and prepared to head home, they heard a heavy movement in the reeds. The team stiffened, fell quiet, and backed away, hoping the crocodile might move forward.

Suspecting the crocodile might be hungry enough to take the bait, Chalaew decided to stay the night.

Nearby, construction workers slept uneasily, but there were no sounds of frantic splashing, as had been hoped. As the sun rose, the chicken carcasses remained untouched.

One week later, the area remained flooded. Neighbors told Anchalee that they shot and killed two crocodiles a few streets away.

"I don't know if it's true or not, but that's what they say," she said by phone. "We haven't seen it since, and the chicken has all fallen off into the water. We only hear the dogs howling."

Restaurants plan DNA-certified premium seafood (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Restaurants around the world will soon use new DNA technology to assure patrons they are being served the genuine fish fillet or caviar they ordered, rather than inferior substitutes, an expert in genetic identification says.

In October, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially approved so-called DNA barcoding ? a standardized fingerprint that can identify a species like a supermarket scanner reads a barcode ? to prevent the mislabeling of both locally produced and imported seafood in the United States. Other national regulators around the world are also considering adopting DNA barcoding as a fast, reliable and cost-effective tool for identifying organic matter.

David Schindel, a Smithsonian Institution paleontologist and executive secretary of the Washington-based Consortium for the Barcode of Life, said he has started discussions with the restaurant industry and seafood suppliers about utilizing the technology as a means of certifying the authenticity of delicacies.

"When they sell something that's really expensive, they want the consumer to believe that they're getting what they're paying for," Schindel told The Associated Press.

"We're going to start seeing a self-regulating movement by the high-end trade embracing barcoding as a mark of quality," he said.

While it would never be economically viable to DNA test every fish, it would be possible to test a sample of several fish from a trawler load, he said.

Schindel is organizer of the biennial International Barcode of Life Conference, which is being held Monday in the southern Australian city of Adelaide. The fourth in the conference series brings together 450 experts in the field to discuss new and increasingly diverse applications for the science.

Applications range from discovering what Australia's herd of 1 million feral camels feeds on in the Outback to uncovering fraud in Malaysia's herbal drug industry.

Schindel leads a consortium of scientists from almost 50 nations in overseeing the compilation of a global reference library for the Earth's 1.8 million known species.

The Barcode of Life Database so far includes more than 167,000 species.

Mislabeling is widespread in the seafood industry and usually involves cheaper types of fish being sold as more expensive varieties. A pair of New York high school students using DNA barcoding of food stocked in their own kitchens found in a 2009 study that caviar labeled as sturgeon was actually Mississippi paddlefish.

In a published study a year earlier, another pair of students from the high school found that one-fourth of fish samples they had collected around New York were incorrectly labeled as higher-priced fish.

Mislabeling of fish ? which account for almost half the world's vertebrate species ? also poses risks to human health and the environment.

In 2007, several people became seriously ill from eating illegally imported toxic pufferfish from China that had been mislabeled as monkfish to circumvent U.S. import restrictions. Endangered species are also sold as more common fish varieties.

Luke Stillman, 16, Injured By Bomb Bought Online

Police are investigating after a teenager suffered burns to his hands when a "deactivated" mortar shell he bought on the internet blew up in his hands.

Luke Stillman, 16, from Walgrave, Northamptonshire, bought the apparently decommissioned Spanish 81mm mortar from a website advertising specialist auction material.

The boy was dismantling the round at his family home when it exploded, injuring his fingers and damaging the desk on which it had been placed, police said.

Luke needed hospital treatment for his injuries.

The website, Specialist Auctions, said the vendor had now been banned from trading.

They said: "We are very strict that the ordnance sold is inert."

Detective Sergeant Andy Rogers, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "This incident could potentially have resulted in Luke sustaining a much more serious injury. As it was, his fingers were burned and the table he was sitting at was damaged.

"Anyone of any description should exercise the greatest care when doing so. Messing around with any ordnance is potentially very dangerous.

"If you discover ordnance of any description, steer clear and contact the police immediately.

"We need to know how this mortar round was still live and available for purchase in this country and, to that end, we are investigating to see whether any criminal offences have been committed under the Firearms Act."

She says all their meals are popular, but oft-requested ones include adyapsandal, a Georgian dish with eggplant and fried sweet peppers, and mantu, Afghan fried cakes filled with ground beef or lamb and served with yogurt and fresh mint.

?Ethnocatering uses [our chefs?] natural home country know-how to cook specialty dishes, and the clients enjoy them because our chefs cook with love,? says Ms. Najmanova.

Best digital picture frames under $80

By Kara Reinhardt
Cheapism.com

For all the time we spend saying ?cheese? over the holidays, we seem to spend little time admiring the photos that result. Family portraits that don?t make the cut for the Christmas card wind up languishing on a memory card. A digital picture frame lets you put all those photos on display. It can also make a thoughtful gift, even for someone who?s not very tech-savvy, if you preload it with a selection of favorite snapshots. Respected brands such as Kodak and Sony offer plenty of features -- and, more important, excellent image quality -- for less than $80.

Look for resolution of at least 640x480 for a 7-inch frame. Larger frames require more pixels to display crisp photos. Experts recommend an aspect ratio of 4:3, the automatic setting on most digital cameras, or 3:2, which is standard on digital SLR cameras. Widescreen may be the way to go in an HDTV, but in a digital frame, an aspect ratio of 16:9 can make photos appear distorted or cropped.

You can fill a digital frame with pictures in a few different ways. Probably the simplest method is to insert a memory card or USB flash drive. Loading photos from a computer using a USB cord is a common alternative. Most models come with some internal memory so you don?t have to leave an external memory source in the frame all the time. A more sophisticated option is to transfer photos wirelessly, but low-cost frames seldom offer that capability.

Extra features available in this price range include a remote control, a slide show function, and built-in speakers and support for audio files, so you can set your photos to music. Many frames also double as a clock, alarm clock, and calendar.

Below are Cheapism?s top picks for affordable digital photo frames.

  • The 7-inch Pandigital PAN7000DW (starting at $60) earns praise from experts and users for its ability to support not only image files but also music and videos. It offers 800x600 resolution, 1GB of internal memory, and a remote control. It also comes with a timer that can be programmed to turn the display on or off. (Where to buy)
  • The 7-inch Kodak EasyShare P750 (starting at $77) can be found on sale for as little as $60. It boasts 800x600 resolution, a remote control, and 2GB of internal memory, at least double the amount of any other frame on our list. It?s also the only model efficient enough to earn Energy Star status. Reviewers recommend it for people without a lot of technical know-how. (Where to buy)
  • The 7-inch Sony DPF-D710 (starting at $67) features a remote control and a timer and automatically rotates images to the proper orientation. It comes with 128MB of internal memory and a 16:10 aspect ratio but uses black bars to keep from stretching or cropping photos to fit the screen. Its 800x480 resolution is lower than our other picks?, but experts and users rave about the image quality. (Where to buy)
  • The Tao Digital Photo Keychain (starting at $10) makes an appealing stocking stuffer. It comes in eight colors and packs 16MB of memory and three to four hours of battery life into 1.5 inches. Reviewers admire the vivid display. (Where to buy)

One final tip: PCMagpoints out that there?s no need to buy a device to display your photos if you own an iPad. You already have a $500 frame.

Robertson: Is mac 'n' cheese 'a black thing?' (omg!)

FILE - In this Jan. 16, 2010 file photo, Rev. Pat Robertson talks to attendees at a prayer breakfast as part of inaugural ceremonies for Virginia Gov.-elect Bob Mcdonnell at the Capitol in Richmond, Va. After showing a clip of an interview with Condoleezza Rice in which she was asked of her must-have Thanksgiving dish, Robertson appeared perplexed and asked his host Kristi Watts, who is black, of the women's shared enthusiasm for mac 'n' cheese, "Is that a black thing?" Watts replied "It is a black thing Pat. ...The world needs to get on board." The two laughed about it. (AP Photo/Clem Britt, File)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) ? Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson has been set straight on Thanksgiving comfort food.

"The 700 Club" founder showed a clip of Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday. Robertson's host, Kristi Watts, asked what dish the former secretary of state had to have on Thanksgiving. Rice replied macaroni and cheese.

Watts reacted enthusiastically, adding "Sister, that is my dish..."

Appearing perplexed, Robertson asked Watts, who is black, of the women's shared enthusiasm for mac 'n' cheese, "Is that a black thing?"

Watts replied "It is a black thing Pat. ...The world needs to get on board." The two laughed about it.

The exchange was posted on The Huffington Post and other blogs.

Robertson has a record of making provocative statements. He said Haiti was cursed one day after a devastating earthquake and that divorcing a spouse with Alzheimer's disease is justifiable.

"Breaking Dawn" on track to gross $285 million in North America (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? After storming the box office this weekend, Summit's newest "Twilight" movie looks on track to gross nearly $300 million domestically.

Richie Fay, Summit's distribution chief, told TheWrap over the weekend that he expects "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" to end up taking in about the same amount as "New Moon" grossed in 2009. He said it was too soon to give a definitive projection.

After this weekend, when box-office watchers can evaluate the drop between opening weekend audiences and second-week audiences, better estimates will be available.

For now, though, one executive at a rival studio said that "Breaking Dawn" is "certainly on track to do $285 million" domestically.

"New Moon," the second in the "Twilight" franchise, grossed $296.6 million domestically and $413.2 internationally.

Both "Twilight" movies opened on the same weekend -- "New Moon" opened November 20, 2009 and "Breaking Dawn" opened on November 18 -- and both opened to similar box office figures.

"Breaking Dawn" had a $139.5 million opening weekend compared to "New Moon's" $142.8 million.

But CinemaScore, the moviegoer surveying firm, said audiences liked "New Moon" better than they liked "Breaking Dawn." "New Moon" had a score of "A-," while "Breaking Dawn" received a middling "B+."

Among the core audience of females, however, "Breaking Dawn" scored an "A-."

In between those movies, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" opened on June 30, 2010 to $157.6 million. But because it opened on a Wednesday, it had a 5-day opening weekend, rather than a 3-day one.

It went on to gross $300.5 million domestically and $397.9 million internationally.

AUTOS: Jaguar XKR-S Already Sold Out

All 25 U.S. versions of the British automaker's fastest-ever convertible were claimed shortly after their unveiling at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Well, that didn?t take long: Jaguar has sold out its entire U.S. production of the 2012 XKR-S Convertible, which was revealed at the opening of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Priced from $138,000, Jaguar opted to build just 25 examples for the U.S. market. The XKR-S has the distinction of being the fastest convertible in the company?s history, with a top speed of 186 miles per hour.

Thanks to a 5-liter supercharged V8 producing 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque, this particular cat is quick off the line, too. Expect a zero to 60 mile per hour time in the range of 4.2 seconds, which makes the XKR-S quicker than both a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet and an Audi R8 4.2 Spyder.

The 2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible maintains a proud family tradition since its hard-top sibling XKR-S Coupe has also sold out its entire U.S. production run.

George W. Bush to raise cancer awareness in Africa (AP)

DALLAS ? Former President George W. Bush will travel to Africa next month to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer, an effort he calls a "natural extension" of a program launched during his presidency that helps fight AIDS on the continent.

Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and officials with the George W. Bush Institute are heading to Tanzania, Zambia and Ethiopia from Dec. 1 through Dec. 5, where they'll visit clinics and meet with governmental and health care leaders.

"We believe it's in our nation's interest to deal with disease and set priorities and save lives," Bush told The Associated Press.

In 2003, Bush launched the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, to expand AIDS prevention, treatment and support programs in countries hit hard by the epidemic.

The new program, called the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon initiative, seeks to expand the availability of cervical cancer screening and treatment and breast care education in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Bush said existing AIDS clinics will be used to screen and treat cervical cancer, which is four to five times more common among those living with HIV than those who don't have the virus. Last year, 3.2 million people received antiretroviral treatments as a result of PEPFAR.

The initiative is a partnership among several organizations, including the Bush Institute, PEPFAR and the United Nations' program on HIV and AIDS. Its goal is to reduce deaths by 25 percent in five years among women screened and treated through the initiative.

"We want to show what works and hopefully others across the continent of Africa will join us,'" Bush said.

Dr. Eric G. Bing, director of global health at the Bush Institute, said it's often more difficult for African women to reveal they have cancer of the reproductive organs than to reveal they have HIV. There are more support groups and treatment available for HIV than cancer, he said.

"There's silence around cancer for many of these communities and in many of these nations. And that's one of the things that we hope to change," Bing said.

Bush moved to Dallas after leaving office in 2009. The George W. Bush Presidential Center, which is set to be completed in 2013 on the campus of Southern Methodist University, will include his presidential library and the already-operating policy institute. Besides global health, the institute focuses on education reform, human freedom and economic growth.

Bush said he and the former first lady will be "pouring our hearts" into the Bush presidential center as it grows.

"This is where we will spend the rest of our lives in the sense of being involved with public policy," Bush said.

Robin Gibb Reportedly Diagnosed With Liver Cancer - Starpulse.com

CELEBNAMEBee Gees legend Robin Gibb was admitted to the hospital again this week as he fights ongoing health troubles.

The 61 year old sparked concerns when he was hospitalised last month with abdominal pains and treated for inflammation of the colon. The singer subsequently canceled an appearance at a charity event in London on October 27 citing ill health.

Gibb was reportedly rushed back to hospital by ambulance on Tuesday, but was allowed to return home after five hours at the medical facility, according to Britain's Sunday Mirror.

The news comes amid a flurry of unsubstantiated reports which suggest the star is battling liver cancer. Gibb had not commented on the story at press time.

Obama, in campaign mode, takes aim in battle state (Reuters)

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama sought to turn up the heat on congressional Republicans in a campaign-style visit to New Hampshire on Tuesday, but came under fire himself from Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in the political battleground state.

Obama struck up a populist tone over jobs and taxes a day after a bipartisan congressional committee announced it had failed to reach a deal to slash federal deficits. It was fresh evidence of partisan gridlock and legislative dysfunction in Washington.

The choice of New Hampshire, where in January Obama's Republican challengers will hold the first primary vote of the 2012 election, automatically thrust him into the campaign spotlight as he faces a tough path to a second term.

He tore into Republican lawmakers for blocking much of his $447 billion job creation plan and challenged them to drop their resistance and vote next week to approve an extension of expiring payroll tax breaks.

"Do you want to help working families get back on solid ground and grow this economy for all of us?" Obama asked in a speech to a cheering crowd at a Manchester high school. "Or do you really want to vote to raise taxes on nearly 160 million Americans during the holidays?"

Romney, who has remained at or near the front of the pack of Republican contenders for most of the campaign, used Obama's New Hampshire visit to roll out a television advertising campaign attacking the Democratic president over his economic record.

The ad shows Obama at a New Hampshire campaign rally in October 2008, before the election the following month, saying he was "confident" of steering the United States out of economic crisis. "He failed," the ad says.

Romney, former governor of neighboring Massachusetts and Republican front-runner in New Hampshire, ignores his party rivals in the ad, sticking to a strategy of looking beyond the primary season and toward a matchup with Obama.

'BLATANT DISHONESTY'

White House spokesman Jay Carney charged, however, that part of the Romney ad was "blatant dishonesty."

The spot uses an edited clip of Obama's 2008 speech that has him saying, "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose."

In fact, Obama's full quote, a mocking reference to his 2008 Republican foe John McCain, was: "Senator McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, 'if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.'"

The economy - with unemployment stuck at 9 percent - is considered the critical issue to voters who will decide next November whether to give Obama a second term.

His strategy - which he has been test-driven in a series of visits to political battleground states in recent months since his jobs bill stalled in Congress - has been to paint the Republicans as obstructing his efforts to boost the recovery.

During his brief stop in New Hampshire, Obama made no mention of Romney, who was in Washington with most of his Republican rivals preparing for the latest in a series of debates on Tuesday night.

But Obama used his speech to remind supporters of the "hope and change" days of his first presidential campaign, and to appeal for patience to allow his policies to work.

"Our economic problems weren't caused overnight and they won't be solved overnight," he said.

Romney did not mince words in an open letter to Obama published in the state's major newspapers. "Dear President Obama. Welcome to New Hampshire," he wrote. "Your policies have failed."

Obama was visiting New Hampshire as Republicans jockeyed for position ahead of the state's January 10 first-in-the-nation primary that can be vital in launching a front-runner.

Obama lost the New Hampshire primary to Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton in 2008 but went on to win the state handily in the general election.

The president will have an uphill fight to keep New Hampshire in his column in 2012. Polls show him running behind in a hypothetical matchup against Romney.
